This is the kaleidoscope quilt I made for my oldest friend. We have known each other since very early years of elementary school. I forgot to take pics and had to have her send some pics. She wasn't home when I went to Idaho and I left it at her business (assisted living home). When she came back home, I emailed to see if she got it. When she said no, my heart sunk. She was at her other assisted living home for a week to relieve her workers. I emailed her and told her what the bag was like that it was in and that it was a quilt. She had by now come home and gone back to the other home. When she got back, she found it and was thrilled. All of this took about 2 1/2 weeks. Talk about relief on my part!

Two of my favorite types of quilts in one!!!! I love it!!!! How original!!! :D :D :D

That is an outstanding quilt. So creative and imaginative. How long did it take to make?

So glad your story had a good outcome. That would've freaked me out. What dear friends you have in each other to do something like this.

Since she barely got the outer border, you can't tell what the original fabric looks like. It is leaves, tiny blossoms, pumpkins and gourds.

That is just wonderful! I absolutely love how you put in the other non kaleidoscope blocks in there - it makes such a wonderful design in it! Awesome placing! She has got to be loving it!

I can hardly wait to make my first one!! I'll be cutting out some fabric for one in the near future!! (ah. I guess that means before the end of the year at the slow rate I'm going!!)

Oh my gosh! Thank you everyone for your wonderful comments. I scanned some of the fabric so I hope it shows ok. I wasn't getting a whole lot of variance in the colors of the blocks. That is why I decided to add the cubes.

Great job!

kd124 08-25-2009 04:30 PM

Thank you all again.

I'm not real sure how long it took. I started out doing a few block, then get something done I needed at the time, a few more, another project. I started well before I had to have it up there. Then about 2 weeks before I left, I got real serious and worked almost daily. I don't know how many times I rearranged the blocks.

I used One Block Wonders by Maxine Rosenthal and absolutely love her method. Also she explains the process very well. I am seriously concidering getting her encore book, One Block Wonders Encore! I guess she explains how to do the cubes in that book which I had to play with to get the look I wanted and proper size. I would think she explains everything well in this book also. EDIT: They are easier to do than it looks and they are a whole lot of fun!

This is stunning. Your design is incredible. Great work.

feline fanatic 08-28-2009 05:18 AM

I LOVE those hollow tumbling blocks! Is the pattern for those in the kaleidoscope book you mentioned or do you have an alternate pattern for those?

Thanks!

Quilt4u 08-28-2009 05:21 AM

Very nice.

RedGarnet222 08-28-2009 05:53 AM

:D Wow This quilt is very nice! I love the fall theme to the shapes and the colors. Too bad you couldn't see her while you were there visiting, though. Life gets too busy doesn't it?

The instructions for the hollow tumbling blocks are not in the One Block Wonder book even though she has pictures of quilts with the cubes in the book. Someone on the board said she tells how to make them in One Block Wonder Encore. I just played around until I got the look I wanted.

mimee4, Quilt4you, and RedGarnet222, thank you. I appreciate everyones comments.

Life does seem to get too busy at times. It seems the older I get the faster time goes!!!

Great Quilt! The Hollow Blocks are a perfect addition to keep the eye moving. Thank goodness the quilt wasn't really lost.

kd124 08-30-2009 10:43 PM

Thank you JoanneS. I was really relieved when she emailed back that she had it.

k3n 08-31-2009 12:17 AM

I love it Kathy - especially the hollow blocks done in co ordinating fabrics. It really lifts the design and turns it into a work of art! :D

BTW - One Block Wonders Encore does tell you how to do all sorts of hollow blocks and it also explains the whole OBW process so I think you could manage with just that book if you were starting out, although I have both... :D

Bevanger 08-31-2009 04:40 AM

kd124 Well - I bought the ENCORE book yesterday. Wow! What beautiful pictures. Looks like it will be fun. Any suggestions on how you pick YOUR fabric? That, I think, will be the tough part... Yours' is stunning....
