LBB block #13- A reverse applique block in a feather pattern
1 Attachment(s)
It feels like I've been a mad woman working on this block. It's #13 of the 40 needed for this quilt. The name is appliqued feather. The space to cut and turn under was so small that I had to take even teenier stitches than usual. And, as always, my block isn't exact to the book. I take designing liberties with what I do. The feathers were stitched in reverse applique method. I think that's the same technique used on Hawaiian quilts. Someone out there will know and tell me if I'm wrong. Please do.
Okay, this quilt is Little Brown Bird by Margaret Docherty. I have completed other blocks and they are posted in my album here on QB. If you have any questions, just ask and, thanks for looking. |
Jean~ your block is another beauty! You are coming along so nicely on your LBB adventure! :)

Great job Nanna, and one more done. It hurts my eyes just thinking about those teensy stitches.
Thanks, Donna. Yes, one more done. And my eyes do hurt...... eye strain from looking at all those teensy stitches.

Reverse applique is not what is used in Hawaiian applique. Your work is beautiful. I do needle turn applique on my Hawaiian quilts but they can also be done by machine.
So tiny and wonderful.
That is stunning!!! Wonderful job.
Beautiful block! I love how you did your design.
The block is gorgeous and it's going to be an outstanding heirloom!
beautifully done

Absolutely beautiful. I went to a talk given by Nancy Chong of Pacific Rim Quilt Company. She said that there is no such thing as reverse applique. I think she is right, because you are always putting one fabric on top and turning the edges under (for needle turn) or stitching it down around the edges. However when people talk about reverse applique it's usually because the fabric on bottom is the one that forms the design, rather than the fabric on top.
I took a hand applique class in which we made block after block of just hearts, but we used different techniques. If the "heart" fabric was on the bottom (so we were turning under the edges of the background fabric), we were doing reverse applique; if it was on top, it was not reverse applique. I think that's the definition most people use. |
It looks like a yummy cake from a fine bakery. Sweet job!
Wow, you do great work.
Beautiful work. Keep going and posting.
Wow....I can tell that you're a great talented quilter! It's a beautiful block.

Fancifrock, please explain how you do needleturn on the machine or did I misunderstand your method. Nanna, your applique is very very, nice. I can see you embellished the flower petal and it looks great. Thanks for sharing. |
I admire your persistence ! At least each block is different which would keep my interest, but your skills FAR outweigh mine in applique. This will be some heirloom for someone special, hopefully you!

I'm getting excited to see them all completed. Great work, patience, and perseverance.
Beautiful block, can hardly wait to see it all together!
Your block is beautiful, as are all the others that you have made. I love looking at them, so hope you will continue to share your blocks on the QB.
Amazing! Love the embellishment of flowers and tendrils! Your work is fabulous. I'm anxious to see it all done, as I'm sure you are! I really want to do some applique, but I'm determined to finish some UFOs before I take on a new project! I have about six quilts (one wall hanging, four baby, and one throw) to get quilted. I love piecing, but have to work at the quilting so I tend to procrastinate that process. However, with football season starting, I do need some handwork to do during commercials, eh? (Of course, if I get those projects quilted, I could do the binding:rolleyes:)..

I think your block is stunning, along with all the others.
WOW! Beautiful, too difficult for me. I hate to hand sew. Love all of your blocks.
I have so loved seeing all your blocks to date. You did inspire me; I just ordered a LBB book to start my own. I hope I can do them half as well as you have done yours!
