Leaders and Enders Irish Chain

2 Attachment(s)
Here is my version of Bonnie Hunter's "leaders and enders" scrappy quilt. I gave this to a friend for a cottage-warming gift. She said she was thinking about hanging it on the wall and I encouraged her to go ahead and use it, as that is what I made it for.

That's so pretty. You did such a great job. What a compliment for her to want to use it as art. :)

Thanks for sharing, I've been setting up my scraps to start this very quilt!

If anybody is looking to swap some squares, the curious quilter (https://thecuriousquilter.wordpress.com) is hosting a square swap that is open right now. 1.5" - 2.5". She is into postage square quilts but I'd like to do a PSQ and then do an Irish Chain like yours.

I love the scrappy Irish Chain! I have wanted to do one, but never got it started. Great job.

Aren't they the best? And "sew e-z" when you do it this way. I made a "Yank's Chain" eons ago & I wish I'd known this technique then!

Did you send a copy of this little gem to Bonnie to post in her gallery? I hope so!!! She needs to see this beauty!

I so agree. And I know if I was your friend that I would count myself so blessed to be able to snuggle under this quilt.

Your quilt is beautiful! I love making scrap quilts - it is so much fun to look at it when it is done and see all the previous quilts that I have made. The lady who did all my quilts for a few years said she always enjoyed the scrappy ones when they came through because she would remember the quilts she had done originally.

I love this book - I purchased it after picking it up and putting it down several times. I hate to pay full price for any book, but this was an exception. I am so glad I bought it.

I have made several quilts from it and have a boat-load of squares cut and ready to go at a moments notice. When I finish making a quilt, I immediately cut my scraps into squares and put them aside.

I have almost finished the "rick rack nines" quilt in the book - I found the material I want for the final border, back and binding - now to get the money together to buy it - hoping to find it at the local big-box quilt store and use a coupon.

Your Irish Chain turned out beautiful. I'm working on one as well. I love her L&E book.

Hemlock Tea 04-13-2012 11:53 AM

She recently had a sale of some scratch and dent L&E books, but I just missed out... I'm going to break down and buy it, because I really want to get on my Irish chain started soon, I should have some charms coming in the mail this month from a swap.

I really like the scrappy look in this quilt!

So much work, very pretty and quilts should be used and loved.

Grandma Peg 04-13-2012 05:50 PM

Very nice scrappy Irish chain.

mighty 04-13-2012 07:27 PM

Beautiful, you did a great job!!!!

Canada Kate 04-13-2012 07:55 PM

Thanks for the compliments! I loved doing this quilt because it is as Bonnie says, you are making a second quilt with out really being aware that you are working on it. I've already started a second one, and I think I will make these forever as they seem effortless, and the 2.5" squares are easy to handle. I didn't know there was a book on Leaders and
Enders, I'm going to have to find me that!

ruthie 04-13-2012 07:59 PM

Very pretty quilt.

elizajo 04-13-2012 08:05 PM

Your scrappy Irish Chain quilt is lovely. I have started to make one several times, but I always get intimidated by those large blank spaces. I like your stitch in the ditch quilting.

nabobw 04-14-2012 04:51 AM

It would also look lovely hanging on the wall

lfstamper 04-14-2012 04:53 AM

Beautiful scrappy!

SueDor 04-14-2012 04:56 AM

Very nice!!!!

Pennyquilter88 04-14-2012 05:07 AM

It is lovely and so cheerful! Good way to use scraps. Thanks for sharing your picture.

bearisgray 04-14-2012 05:49 AM

What size squares did you use? It is a lovely scrappy - nice distribution of colors in it.

Wanabee Quiltin 04-14-2012 06:01 AM

Love this quilt. I saw this one in her book and decided I will make it the way you did, just scraps. Really nice quilt.

I used 2.5" squares, but you could make them smaller if you wanted to, you would just have to make more blocks.

gsbuffalo 04-15-2012 04:28 AM

love all the colors

ItsJustMe 04-15-2012 08:24 AM

What a lovely gift! You did a good job.
