I finished another quilt for Christmas last night. This one is titled "Baywatch" and is for a granddaughter and her husband. They lived in the Northeast while she was doing her residency and would go boating often. So, I wanted something with a nautical look. Hubby insisted there had to be a submarine in the water since he is a retired submariner.
The photos of Baywatch are on page three of my Webshots album 2008 Quilts. http://community.webshots.com/album/568730025LqxhQh |
Awesome job! Yup, gotta have a sub in there!!
I asked hubby one day that when he's out to sea, can he see the subs "swimming" under him. lol He's on a Sub Tender now and is off subs. I'm sure you've seen the picture of the surface ship and the subs under it. |
very nice looking quilt.
you are quite talented. |
Wow... the quilt looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.
|
WOW Just WOW. Nothing more can be said. WOW
|
It's awesome!

Thank you Terri. Does the Navy still offer dependents cruises? I was able to go on the USS Nebraska in 1999 and had a blast. That's one of the nuclear subs. We went out in the Atlantic and down some 700 feet whatever the subs number is.

Thank you Dreamer. This is the one I told you about on the chat Monday night.

Wow, so original! I love the octopus and that pebble fabric! Where did you find that? You certainly have made a lot of quilts this year!
|
That is a gorgeous quilt!
|
Wow! That is super spectacular! I'm looking at it and thinking its 2" squares...but how is the lighthouse, sub, etc. put on there? Are they pieced or appliqued or do you have a secret method?? Inquiring minds want to know
|
I love it!
|
Quiltykitty, the way you transitioned from pebbles to sand to sand underwater to clear water, and the waves and water depth - awesome!!!
Also, your 2007 prize winning quilt is wonderful. |
What an awesome job you did!!
My neighbor would love this, she is a light house fan. |
Thanks Aggi

Thanks Barb

Denise I agree with you. Landscape quilts are wonderful to make and allow one to use fabric in unusual ways. And they do leave one feeling creative.

Thank you Rein

The pebble and rock fabric is Nature Scapes style D900 by Hoffman. That fabric goes from big rocks to smaller rocks to pebbles then sand and then water or sky. So that was the major part of the shore.
The gray and white fabric with sand pebbles is called Riverbed by Makower UK. I used another rock fabric, but I don't know its name. I either got them at Big Horn Quilts or Hayloft Fabrics online. I've had them for over a year. I have lots of fabric for landscapes. |
Thank you SewSewQuilter

Sandpat,
The Submarine is painted on. The glass in the periscope is silver glitter fabric paint. Don't remember if it shows up on the photo, but there are birds in the sky and they are painted on with a black permanent Sharpie marker. Octopus is a greenish batik with some painting and is appliqued to quilt. I used the marker to add the suckers on the tentecals. The boat and house were printed on fabric from my card program and then appliqued to quilt. Lighthouse is a brick fabric with doors and windows of Kona Snow and fused to the lighthouse background. Then the details were painted on the window and door then appliqued to the quilt. The top of the lighthouse was appliqued and the light was painted with silver glitter fabric paint. The railing around the top is just that permanent marker again. The base of the lighthouse is a rock wall fabric with the steps painted on and then a little thread painting for definition. You did not ask, but the sky is composed of three different fabrics. One is a watercolor fabric and the other two are sky prints. Then I added some highlights with fabric paint. Thank you for your comments. And did I satisfy inquiring minds? |
Celeste, thank you for the compliment. I hope the couple like it.
|
Pal, thank you for your comment. Actually, the 2007 quilt is the only one of all my quilts that I still have. All the others were gifts.
|
Sewnsewer2, thank you for you comment. My SIL would love it also as her house is decorated in lighthouse theme.
|
Sandpat
They are 3" squares and I used that fusible grid stuff so I was able to be precise. |
Thanks for explaining all that sooo clearly. I was thinking that some of it had to be painted...you did a really great job on it. So...are you starting a series of these??
|
I love it. Awesome job!

Thanks Bev
