I think the hardest part of making a log cabin is deciding what layout to use once all those blocks are put together! When I had finished the blocks for DH's log cabin, he was away on a trip. I photographed a bunch of layouts, then posted them to facebook so he could see them and choose his favorite.

Anyone else have any other layouts? :)

So many possibilities!

Wonderful !

... edited ...
one of your later photos was my suggestion.

:) I like the one you picked, too.

(There are over 1,000 possible layouts of 4 half square patches)

quiltsRfun 10-18-2011 01:37 PM

Which one did he choose?

BMP 10-18-2011 01:47 PM

I liked the 5th one !!

Fortunately we both came to the same conclusion, regarding a favorite- we both liked the layout in the third from the bottom the best, because it had a lot of movement and we liked the secondary designs. Still like a lot of the other layouts a lot, too, though! :)

Born2Sew 10-18-2011 01:51 PM

They are all beautiful! I think I agree though, the third from the bottom is the most striking.

campion 10-18-2011 01:52 PM

Kristin that is my favourite too.

stitchinwitch 10-18-2011 01:53 PM

Thanks for showing those! 'LOVE that log cabin!

Painiacs 10-18-2011 02:02 PM

Amazing! Haven't done one.

Painiacs 10-18-2011 02:04 PM

Is each block exactly the same??

Jim's Gem 10-18-2011 02:07 PM

I would have chosen the same layout that you did. Beautiful!@!

agreed!

dunngriffith 10-18-2011 02:07 PM

I think the first one is neat. I don't remember seeing that one. I think the log cabin block is beautiful and so easy!

IBQLTN 10-18-2011 02:09 PM

I really like the fist layout. It's not one you see all the time.

Very nice work and I love, love, love your colors. I'm sure DH will love it too!

Thanks for sharing!

QuiltE 10-18-2011 02:15 PM

Everyone is lovely!
There are SO many log cabin layouts. I applaud you for taking the time to layout all of them!! It's a lot of work to flip them around to try all the variations.

Do you have them sewn together for us to see now? Please? and Thanks!

QUILTNMO 10-18-2011 02:18 PM

i like the 3rd and last one but no matter its a beautiful quilt

QuiltnNan 10-18-2011 02:24 PM

thanks for all the pretty layouts.

DeeBooper 10-18-2011 02:27 PM

Aren't they fun to play with? You may never get them together!

redquilter 10-18-2011 02:35 PM

It's such a tough decision. Been there, done that! He (and you) picked a good one! Your colors are really nice.

Each block is the same in size and design but they are all scrappy so each block is different. They do each have a red center, then half the strips on one side are light fabrics, and the other half are dark.

debcavan 10-18-2011 02:38 PM

Yeah and how do you decide, flip a coin. They all look great.

Oh, my word, it took forever! I got such a workout- up, down, up, down, over and over, lol.

I do have them all sewn together now, it's actually my avatar photo. I posted it in this link when I'd finished sewing it all together-- http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-134899-1.htm

Painiacs ... as noted this one, the strips are not all in the same place, as it's a scrappy. Some log cabins are matchy-matchy. What I mean by this is that fabrics are chosen, and then each block will be identical.

I like that one, too. But it would be a hard choice. Maybe one of the other designs for you next log cabin? :)

Thanks ... I do remember seeing it in the original thread. The colours look so different that I didn't remember it.

I'm sure you and your DH are both enjoying it!

Yes, the lighting wasn't the best when I took these photos since it was late at night. :)
I'm sure you and your DH are both enjoying it!

That was so much fun looking at the different layouts! I have to make some log cabins out of my scraps... I don't know if I could pick a layout. It is funny that some of them make it look smaller. I love the colors!

I just read your post about the finished project and I love it even more- love that little red border and the big scrappy piano- key type border.

I can't wait to see it quilted- wow, ten years. What I am saying, I have lots of UFO's that old- good for you for finishing one!

memaw4 10-18-2011 03:18 PM

Kristin...thanks so much for sharing. My plans for the long winter ahead is to make my "first" log cabin quilt..... What size block would be the best to go with for a queen size bed?

You've given me some great ideas on placement. Now to just decide!

Thanks for any and all advice you can give me.

rexie 10-18-2011 03:41 PM

Holy Cow!

Oh, boy... Well, mine is a full-size (with borders not shown in these pictures) and the blocks finish at 7 inches- it works out to 96 blocks (12 blocks x 8 blocks), plus the borders. I made the "logs" of my blocks finish at 1" wide, so there are 13 strips within each block. The nice thing about log cabins, though, is that you can do whatever you want. Log cabin strips can be made any width you like. I'd originally planned to make my blocks bigger (with more strips) than I did but I liked them the way they were so stopped adding. Have fun with it! :)

neece 10-18-2011 03:45 PM

Wonderful quilt and I would have a hard time deciding on only 1 layout

Rose L 10-18-2011 05:42 PM

I have a pattern that forms a large star in the center. Some of the blocks have to be all darks and some all lights though.

goosepoint 10-18-2011 05:43 PM

I like 6 - 7 - or 8. They look balanced.

coastienest 10-18-2011 05:44 PM

Oh my goodness, I would not have been able to pick. They are all fantastic!!!

Quilted Horse 10-18-2011 05:54 PM

Well, the only solution is to make more blocks so you can make one of each!

sarahrachel 10-18-2011 06:13 PM

I love the first one. I think I may need to make a log cabin quilt now! Thanks for showing the different layouts and I'm sure you'll both enjoy the finished product!

xsquilter 10-18-2011 06:16 PM

Oh my, when you show the layouts like this, it's so hard to decide. But my fave is the third last or the last one. Great blocks!
Maureen

Matilda 10-18-2011 06:19 PM

That is pretty cool! What did you end up doing?

trif 10-18-2011 07:06 PM

So many choices, I'm with you, it's so hard to decide.
