My DIL saw a quilt similar to this in a book I got a year ago at Christmas. She liked it and said "if you ever...I'd like this". So I got the pattern, didn't like the way the flowers were made so it got laid aside. Recently someone showed me how to make the flower petals using a 5 inch square of fabric--they were easy and fun to do. I made yo-yo's for the center and topped it off with a button.
I used 2 layers of batting so it would be puffy and then just did in the ditch quilting. The up close pictures are much truer in color. The full quilt picture didn't turn out so well!
This will be her Christmas present for 2010. I'll have a hard time not showing it to her before then!

I will do a tutorial on the flowers. I could probably just tell you, but pictures always help. I'll post a message when I get it ready.

Thanks for all the wonderful responses. Glad you enjoyed the quilt.

It turned out to be the perfect hand sewing project for the 2 weeks I stayed with my sister after her knee surgery. It was nice to have something to keep my hands busy as we sat together. I did applique the bottom leaves onto the fabric square at her house. I had them ironed on so they just needed stitching. The flower sorta "grew" as I worked on it. The Yo-Yo centers and the buttons were part of the growing.

That is a beautiful quilt. Yes, please do a Tute.

mimee4 03-03-2010 12:03 AM

You will have to put the quilt under lock and key - and give the key to someone else - to keep from giving her the quilt early. Fantastic job.

k3n 03-03-2010 12:18 AM

Beautiful! I'll keep checking back for the tute! Thanks so much for offering to share.

I just posted a tutorial. I must have exceeded the allotted space so need to add a couple of things. One, the quilt block is 10 1/2 inches square. The leaf pattern came in the pattern I bought, but you could draw something similar. I used underwonder and ironed it onto the block, then zig-zagged around the outer edge.

otterquilt 03-04-2010 08:47 AM

It's beautiful. I can't wait until you do the tutorial!
