This is the quilt I made for the oldest granddaughter and her husband for Christmas. I'm quite happy with this one. I did the quilting myself on my Viking D1. Hard pushing all that fabric through the throat. The backing is an example of how one copes with not enough fabric. I've done something like this on several quilts.

Sparky, this fits a queen bed and is square. I got the directions from Jan Krentz's book "Lone Star Quilts and Beyond." It definitely takes time. There is a chart in the book for different sizes and you might be able to make a 12" square, but it would be awfully small pieces.
