I have had this fabric for a lone star quilt for three years. I didn't pick this fabric. The young couple did. I am not too happy with some of the values but it is their choice. Long story short, they are part of my son's circle and like my children....so here we go.

I am using the, "Joy of Quilting" for the pattern. For those who are afraid to try a lone star, doing it the strip method is very doeable.

I am making a King size quilt, so the strips are cut at 3 inches wide and each diamond will have six strips. The couple decided where the colors would go and so they are labled from a to k.

I set them up in rows and sew the strips together, six strips in each strada. Before sewing the strips, they are set 3 inches in ( the width they were cut) so as not to waste fabric.

the first strip set begins with a, b, c, d, e, and f. The second strip begins with b and the third begins with c and so on.

When I get ready to sew the strip sets together. I put them to the side of me so I don't get confused and add too many or less.

This looks like a lot of work! I'm interested in seeing how it comes together!

Looking forward to seeing it done, too, to see how everything looks together! I like the colors. Good luck on your project.

I sew all six strada strips sets.
.
Here the strip is sewed and I use the 45degree on the ruler to make the first angle cut. Then subsequent strips are cut at three inches (the same width they were cut).

After every three or four strips, check the angle and clean it up ( recut the angel) and then cut the rest of the strips, eight strips from each strada.

After all the strips are cut from the stradas. They are grouped according to the letter they begin with.

Then I take a strip from each set and sew a diamond.

The strips are sewed in twos, then two and two and etc. It is important to pin each seam, as you want it to line up perfectly.

One diamond done.

My regret is that I had to follow the instruction in the book and cut the strips accross the grain and that goes against my grain lol. I had no choice because they bought the fabric so long ago and they bought it according to the instructions in the book. But not to worry, it will turn out ok.

This quilt is going to be beautiful. I have always wanted a lone star but would never attempt it. Good luck and keep us posted on progress.
