My niece stopped over today to ask if I could do something with this quilt she had. It's a yo yo quilt that my mom made for her when she was just little. We figured about 38-39 years ago. I remember mom working on it and the more I looked at it the more I remembered it. I was about 12-13 years old. Her mother never let her use it much although she did keep it folded at the end of her bed for a few years. It's been stored in a storage bin for years and my niece just discovered it. It's pretty fragile and already held together by safety pins in a few spots. We are thinking we could attach it to a backing, do a border and she could hang it in her bedroom. Not a project I can start now but certainly something to look forward to.

That's alot of Yo-Yo's. Very Pretty.

Wow! It's beautiful! I think what you are planning for it is the way to go.
Awww what a treasure! It is awesome that she wants to preserve it :D:D:D
I agree with puttin it on backing. I would also consider having appraised for insurance reasons. It is truly a treasure!!
 I can imagine your DM must have put a lot of time into that quilt! Too bad it was never used! It is beautiful!
Yes, I think backing is a great idea!!! I think keeping and loving treasures like this one is soooo important. Also you should make a label of who made it and when and for whom it was made.
very nice
What a treasure :!: I would also tack the yo-yos on to the backing. :XD:
And this was made before we had the simple yo-yo maker available! Backing, label, sew up the pinned places - certainly a treasure! I wonder if many of these fabrics were from old dresses & shirts - seems likely in an era when most quilters were frugal. Good thing for me to emulate - frugality!

wow...that is a great treasure!!!
We just found an "oldie" from my DMIL, I took it to some Quilt Ladies all had different ideas how to "save" it.
So far I think will be looking for one of those glass quilt curios. :) |
Oh...What a treasure indeed!
beautiful quilt, thanks for sharing with all of us
very pretty, on the yo-yo's is that the top or the other way around? i have an old one and I was wondering which way was up. ty
What a labor of love this quilt took. Beautiful and wonderful to have it remain in the family with all the memories attached. :-)

Such a treasure and do whatever it takes to preserve it. Very beautiful.

Stunning quilt. The gathered side is the top. I would back it. Don't know about hanging it. From my experience yo-yo's can be very heavy.
Just beautiful. A true labor of love by your dear mother.
i think they are reversible. which ever side you like best at the time is the right one.
What a treasure for your family. I hope you will share pictures when you are done with your restoral project.
This is a LOT of work. I agree with attaching this to a backing. It is such a labor of love and should be shown as safely as possible. Good luck and do post pics when you have completed this.

This quilt is gorgeous!
I made a yo-yo quilt almost 50 years ago. When I finished the yo-yo top I attached the quilt to a bed sheet by tying it in the middle of every yo-yo. This helped stabilize the quilt but the yo-yos have still pulled apart in a few places. It makes a very heavy quilt. I don't think I'd recommend hanging it at all. I'd be afraid the weight would pop all of the seams. Here's where my quilt is posted. If you look closely you can see my ties in the centers of the yo-yos. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-1959-1.htm |
Beautiful!
Wow, that is definitely more yo-yos than I would ever want to make. Such patience! Beautiful quilt.
Not to sure I would hang it as it would be very heavy even with backing on it...But I would do a backing so you could put over chair couch etc, even a quilt rack
Very pretty! I am sure you will get lots of ideas on how to shore it up on this site. I am so glad your niece was to display it.
Really Cool!

How many yo-yos do you think are there? It must have taken years to make.
I remember yo-yos. My mother still has a box of those never put together.
How lovely...even nicer if you can work on the restoration together. Maybe it could be draped over a guest bed or a day bed? I think hanging it could cause a lot of stress on the fabrics.
