Oh my...do I have the world's best hubby or what? :D Saw this in a local used furniture store...I drooled and whimpered....he bargined and loaded it in that car!! Made sometime between 1878 and the late 1880's according to what I can find on Needlebar...

~happy lil sigh~ He gave up a planned fishing trip to the coast to bring this home!! Love that man to pieces!

With the cabinet, I think it's original...is stamped W&W

Close up of the machine...seems to work like a charm, altho I have to figure out loading the bobbin and threading her!

From what I understand, this kind of cabinet is called a "Coffin Lid"??

uh oh!!! Better take some Dramamine

Lostn51 04-13-2010 03:24 PM

Charlee, that is in absolutely gorgeous condition!!! And yes that is a "Coffin top".

Its rare that you find one that complete and with the majority of the decals left on it. Not too many folks know this but look at the Presser Foot closely....... that is a glass Presser Foot. It was a proprietary feature with the W&W's.

That is a great collectors piece!!

Oh and tell your Hubby I love him too!!!!

Billy

Charlee 04-13-2010 03:31 PM

:) Thanks! William laughed and blew you a kiss Billy...should I be worried?

Serial # is 434598...she has the early version of tensioner...but has the release bar on the bobbin case...guessing she was born sometime about 1880...would that be right?

sewgull 04-13-2010 03:36 PM

You are lucky lady. She's a beauty.

I really have not the faintest idea about dating the W&W's. My buddy Miller would know for sure, he is the resident expert on the W&W 8's on the NB and I am thinking he has 3 or 4 and one being an Antebellum issue. I will email him and find out for you.

That is his all time favorite machine in the whole world!!

Billy

sharon b 04-13-2010 03:44 PM

 WOW  Take the dramamine , he deserves it

Leota 04-13-2010 03:49 PM

That is so awesome.

dahna42 04-13-2010 03:59 PM

Beautiful....I have an old one in my basement , similar, I should polish it up. Do you mind me asking what you paid.

Lostn51 04-13-2010 04:01 PM

Charlee I sent Miller an email and I should hear back from him soon. I lifted the photos of it to help him date it just in case the serial was a between year.

I am going to have to pull a road trip I can see that!!

Billy

Charlee 04-13-2010 04:01 PM

I don't mind at all Dahna...too much for our financial condition right at the moment, but he'd been saving for his fishing trip, so he parted with $100.00 for her...

I think I'll name her "Ellen" after my g-g-grandmother! :)

SUSAN 04-13-2010 04:04 PM

don't let that DH get away!!!

Billy, you and your family have a place to stay if you do! :D Thanks for checking with Miller....I appreciate it! :)

***Vanity disclaimer*** Have been buzzing around since we got home from town and hadn't brushed my hair yet when I sat down to test Ellen's stitching ability, so have "coat collar hair".... and the blouse I'm wearing is one of my "transition" blouses from when I first started losing weight ***disclaimer over*** ;)

She sews nicely!! :D

I bought a sewing machine at a garage sale last summer - I'm attaching a picture of it - only paid $5 for it, and I need to find a power cord for it as the lady couldn't find it - any ideas?

yorkie 04-13-2010 06:03 PM

I am drooling looking at how clean and minty the machine is!

And the lady is not bad herself!! ;)

Billy

Charlee 04-13-2010 06:53 PM

Nativewoman, I *think* that's something you can get from any number of online sources....I'd try this man first....his name is Guy Baker, and if you send an email with your phone number, he calls... to make sure that he has what you want/need.

http://www.sewingmachineparts.net/pricelist.html

He actually refused to sell me a new motor for my Kenmore until the old one burns out for sure...and so far, it's going strong and has stopped smoking! :)

sewsue 04-13-2010 07:02 PM

wow you are so lucky to have a treasure like that.

nativewoman 04-13-2010 07:04 PM

Thanks for the info!

~blush~ Thank you Kind Sir! Just finished using Howard's Furniture Restore and a beeswax/orange oil finish on the cabinet...now I'm on a mission to find out what the burled wood inset on the bonnet is....any ideas? :)
