I tried... and failed. Ugh. :( I ended up picking out what I did do. I was using walking foot, so maybe that was part of the problem? I tried the FMQ foot, but I would end up with big and small stiches. I may still try it again (i know, prob shouldnt since it is finished and bound, but its just a house lap quilt).

If you want to experiment .. yes, I would definitely do FMQ. If you wanted to highlight the birds, you could just FMQ their outline. And then, some kind of meander in the trees would make them recede a bit to let the birds stand out. it really doesn't matter if the stitches are not all exactly the same length... just have fun with it.

Yes those simple borders are simply beautiful. They do not detract from the lovely panel

Someone else had made a quilt with that panel months ago. I didn't know it was a panel & used the picture for the basis of one of my little girl quilts!! I LOVED that panel/quilt! It was my 1st attempt at applique. I mostly ended up only using the trees in the end & then adding
other things to it. I'm glad you posted it so I can see it again.
