Made my Dad a barn quilt

1 Attachment(s)
I made my dad a barn quilt for Christmas. Except where I come from, it's called a shed. So, I made my dad a shed quilt for Christmas that is 6' x 6' ... Had to rent a Uhaul trailer to get it to western Kansas from Texas. Anyway, he LOVED it!

Patti25314 01-09-2013 05:36 PM

What is it made of?

Marycumi 01-09-2013 05:47 PM

Great work!

faykilgore 01-09-2013 05:53 PM

I also want to know what it's made of to prevent fading & sun damage. How big is it & what did you construct it with. It's a great idea & looks fabulous on his shed!

Awesome!!!!!

Love it! I'll be back to see your answer to the question above. I'd love one for my hubs' shed.

nunnyJo 01-10-2013 04:38 AM

love it, making one for the front of our house, who says you have to have a barn?

catladyquilts 01-10-2013 04:58 AM

that is awesome - great job. it looks wonderful, like it was meant to be there

sniktasemaj 01-10-2013 05:02 AM

I like it and would like to make one for our cottage up North. We don't have a barn or a shed. I also thougt of making a small one to hang on the front door.

ljptexas 01-10-2013 05:20 AM

Wow! It is gorgeous... Yeah, here in Texas we do call them sheds, regardless of size. Such a wonderful gift! Was it a surprise? People will think of you everytime they lay eyes on it..

The strong design connects the (rather plain) steel shed with the decorated barns of the past....Is it on metal or some type of plywood or.........?

nygal 01-10-2013 06:15 AM

It looks great!!

gabeway 01-10-2013 07:37 AM

Great job!

quiltyfeelings 01-10-2013 09:32 AM

Thanks for your sweet comments. It's made of pre-treated plywood. I also used pre-treated 2x4's on the edges to help keep it from warping. It is 6' x 6' and weighs about 150 pounds! I primed it well using exterior primer. I used exterior paint to paint it and put several coats of a sealant on the top. Hope this is helpful.

quiltyfeelings 01-10-2013 09:34 AM

Oh, yes the name of this block is the "North Star." My parent's last name and my maiden name is North. I used red, white, and blue because my dad served a few years in the military and is very partial to our servicemen and women!
and one for the front door is a FANTASTIC idea!! Think how nice it would look hanging on point!

I love it! Have seen a couple in the area but sure like yours best.

Lucy90 01-11-2013 05:43 AM

I plan on making a couple of barn quilts but for my garage. I thought it would be nice to have them on the long side of the garage to make it decorative. This is a future quilt to be made.

WisWis 01-11-2013 07:36 AM

Lovely quilt.

PolkaBabe 01-11-2013 01:52 PM

Very nice. I grew up in western Kansas, & don't remember seeing anything like that on any building. Want to make a much smaller one for my deck. Thank you for sharing your photo.

Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. That treated ply- and wood are devilishly heavy!
