Making lemonade

I'm having to rethink my love affair with cast iron pots as a really did my back this time trying to put one in the oven. I was totally sidelined for 5 days. What did I do? Hand sewing. I powered through the last dozen interior blocks for the Jane Stickle Quilt. Now I can start the exterior triangles. Only 56 more. Oh Joy. Progress. Ouch.

Tartan 11-29-2015 02:01 PM

Looking great! I have learned to adjust some tasks that used to be easy. I vacuum one room a day instead of the whole house, I rotary cut a bit at a time, I use a little step ladder instead of a chair for reaching the top shelf and anything heavy I wait for help. This getting old stuff isn't for sissies.

susiequilt 11-29-2015 02:24 PM

I just ordered a stainless steel pan to use instead of my cast iron. The cast iron got too heavy for my wrists. The new pan has two handles so I hope that's a help.

You made great use of your time! It's beautiful.

(Off topic, Mary Katherine. You were displaced by a hurricane and were in temporary housing, weren't you? If this is the correct person, I hope you're settled and happy.)

HillCountryGal 11-29-2015 02:34 PM

Wow! That's a LOT of work you've done there.
Looking really good.

MissSongbird 11-29-2015 02:36 PM

You are a champion lol I would have gotten bored or distracted after 5 minutes. Such nice work! Great job!

LOL No hurricane's here except that I haven't tidied in days!

Tweety2911 11-29-2015 03:34 PM

Sorry to hear about your back but glad you figured out a way to make progress anyway. Looking terrific!

mucky 11-29-2015 03:40 PM

Ditto for me too. I wouldn't have even gotten 1 block finished.

PaperPrincess 11-29-2015 06:07 PM

Looks like you used your time wisely. I'm in awe of anyone attempting that quilt.
My girlfriend got a large enameled cast iron French oven (you know, one of those really expensive ones). When she went to use it for the first time, she found out she couldn't lift it with a roast inside.

Tartan, that was my dad's favorite saying, except he would add "... but it's better than the alternative"

QM 11-29-2015 10:10 PM

I have zero interest in making one of those, but I can appreciate YOUR labors. BTW, I had to give up MY love affair with cast iron after I broke my wrist badly.

Great use of your recuperating time. Hope you feel better soon. I don't think I could ever tackle a quilt like that!

skypony 11-30-2015 04:00 AM

I love your quote. that's cute. I love chocolate too.

skypony 11-30-2015 04:03 AM

ouch I bet that had to hurt. sorry about that.

here's my quote for the day. "If life is a bowl of cherries, what am I doing in the pits?" lol

todiesmom 11-30-2015 04:11 AM

Lovely quilt...looks like a lot of work...please do not give up on cast iron pots. I have every size imaginable and love their cooking abilities. I can't imagine making a roux without one,,as you can tell from that remark..I am originally from New Orleans and was raised with grandmother and mom using cast iron pots. Back to quilting great job on that quilt and many of your others that I have seen on this board...get well soon...

Wanabee Quiltin 11-30-2015 05:05 AM

Those blocks look fantastic. As we get older, we have to find alternative ways to do what we always did. I'm just grateful I'm still here !

Geri B 11-30-2015 05:48 AM

I really cannot justify one of those heavy things....empty, it weighs a ton, full it must take a elephant to lift! And to what end? Food will cook just as well in a lighter vessel..another expensive gimmick! Jmho

#1piecemaker 11-30-2015 06:27 AM

Your quilt is going to be gorgeous!

Kitsie 11-30-2015 08:55 AM

Wonderful, MaryKatherine! Love your bright colors! Your blocks look so nice!

annette1952 11-30-2015 11:12 AM

It is really looking good! You are doing a great job! That looks like so much work. So sorry about your back. I have back problems also & you are right. It isn't for sissy's lol

MargeD 11-30-2015 12:23 PM

Hope you are feeling better by now. Your quilt is going to be absolutely gorgeous when it's finished. Can't wait to see it. Yes, we do have to make changes and allowances for getting older, but it sure beats the alternative.

QUILTNMO 11-30-2015 12:32 PM

its beautiful!!!

woodyandjake 11-30-2015 01:56 PM

I love the work you've done on Jane. I have to get started on mine. Hope your back is better.

tatavw01 11-30-2015 04:14 PM

Omg so much work! Looks great

redquilter 11-30-2015 04:24 PM

Hope your back is better now. I empathize with you. The quilt is magnificent. Far too tedious for my short attention span.

oksewglad 11-30-2015 04:54 PM

So glad you could put your down time in something productive...still wavering on whether I want to make a Jane...I have so many UFO's that I need to finish first...

Not LOL at your predicament via the skillet, but I took mine out mopping floors Wed before Thanksgiving...should I give up floor mopping?.....

Yes!
The first time I hurt my back, 30 yrs ago, I was vacuuming. My dr. said most women to injury to their backs initially through housework. That says it all! LOL

IBQUILTIN 11-30-2015 07:27 PM

Beautiful work, and lots of it. Hope you are feeling better

twinkie 12-01-2015 02:45 AM

Sorry about your back but your quilt is amazing.

carolynjo 12-01-2015 07:04 AM

I have so many cast iron skillets, etc., from my grandmother; dread the day when I can no longer use them. Nothing cooks like cast iron! Will continue using them until I can no longer lift them.

Boy, you can say that again!

Mariposa 12-01-2015 08:47 AM

You made good use of your "down" time. Great variety of blocks!

mjhaess 12-01-2015 12:13 PM

That looks awesome...Good job...

Karen Mc 12-01-2015 03:34 PM

Sorry you were sidelined, but you sure stated a beautiful quilt while "taking it easy"!

sewlittletime 12-02-2015 03:53 PM

This is one quilt I would love to try my hand at. I think these are outstanding , yours is not exception. Where do you begin? Do you have a book? This is going to be beautiful when it's finished.

Stevensgirl 12-02-2015 08:35 PM

Keep going - it is looking great! I can't wait to see your finished project.

Grandma Peg 12-02-2015 09:01 PM

Wow, your quilt is gorgeous!

heather1949 12-06-2015 07:04 PM

Oh my that is STUNNING :)

MaryKatherine 12-08-2015 07:35 AM

I have the book only. I'm cheap so we found a used copy on EBay. Highschool geometry is all it takes and the pictures in the book or life size.
Its been a journey but its not over yet.
