Ninnie 09-11-2009 03:13 PM

I am guilty of starting this in My PDA, and am now moving it to pictures. the reason I started it there, was because it is going to be a long drawn out process, and will take a few weeks to finish, and didn't think anyone would be interested in it this early in the process.
This is a Navy and Blue pattern that I have had on my to do list for about 10 years. I am usually a scrap quilter, using several different materials in the same quilt, so this is a big step out of my comfort zone.
the first thing is to decide on the material. the finished quilt will be 90 inches by 108 inches. When I went to purchase the fabric, I had not written down how much I needed of each color. I came home with 4 yards of navy and 3 yards of white. And upon reading the directions, I realized that I didn't have enough material. So back I go to buy 3 more yards of navy and 1 more yard of the white.
Here is the pieces that I picked out.

the first step was to start cutting it into strips, and all the setting rectangles.

And on to the sewing of the strips together. And then ironing all of them. Here are some of them done.

Ooh Ninnie

You just can't go wrong with Navy & White - I know from your previous work that this too is going to be a beauty. Is the Navy fabric a spot or star design, I wasn't able to download & enlarge to see it properly.

After having all the strip sets done, the cutting and sewing starts.

the first ones I did were the 2 white with 1 blue in the middle, and the 2 blue with 1 white in the middle.

Ninnie 09-11-2009 03:30 PM

I have turned these into 110 9 patches.these are all made now!! :D :D

Next I will take the strip sets that are made up of 1 1/2 in white strip, and 1 1/2 inch navy strips and cut them into 1 1/2 in segments and then sew them into 80 4 patches. :D this is what I will be working on tonight ! :D
Hope you enjoy following along with me, this will be at least another week in the works, I am a slow worker and I do pin all of those places where the patches meet up.

the navy has white dots in it, I didn't want to use a solid, and the white is a small print, white on white! :D

Thank you for putting this in here! :-)

I've never thought of tying up the little bundles like you did at the start, that's an excellent idea, especially for huge amounts. Thank you for sharing :-)

joeyoz 09-11-2009 03:36 PM

Nope, no need for guilt. You were about your business, and someone asked, whatcha working on...so you showed them.
Me? I can't post pics in progress of a project or I get completely "under pressure" and can't work!
It's, either, - here, it's all finished, or nothing!
I admire your courage, and your quilt is going to be spectacular. I like sharp, crisp colors :D

Bayou Quilter 09-12-2009 12:45 PM

chickadee_42us 09-12-2009 02:00 PM

I appreciate your showing your starting steps too, it can seem so overwhelming sometimes.

Darlene 09-12-2009 02:26 PM

It will be classy I love those colors.

Ducky 09-12-2009 03:13 PM

Wow, that is going to be soooo pretty! I love the blue and white.

Ninnie 09-13-2009 03:24 AM

Fighting p-monia here, but managed to get something accomplished yesterday.
I now have the 4 patches done.

When cutting the strips to mkae them, I layer them with the colors across from each each other, so that I can pick up the first 2 and they are ready to sew.

And then I chain pieced them. Something I have learned to do here on this board. :D Sorta like peeling that apple, can I sew 80 4 patches with out having to break the thread.

then cutting the threads and hand pressing them open.

Ninnie 09-13-2009 03:28 AM

Here's what I have so far, 110 9 patches with 990 pieces in them
80 4 patches with 320 pieces in them.

This is a picture of all the pieces.
The wide strip sets on the left are the next to do, I have already cut some of them into 1 1/2 inch segments. I have cut 80 of each, to be sewn into 80 rectangles.

Sorry, I guess I should have told the name,
It is called BURGOYNE

Harmony 09-13-2009 06:20 AM

What pattern are you using? This is kind of like a mystery quilt, but you're doing all the work and we just get to watch! Whatever pattern it is, it's going to be beautiful--the blue and white are so crisp together! n Keep posting you progres, please!

Ducky 09-13-2009 06:22 AM

Ninnie, it's going to be just gorgeous! Like Harmony said, it's such a crisp, fresh look!

this pattern comes from a book called QUILTING, pieces of the past

It is called BURGOYNE

I can just keep going as I am , and you can watch the squares start to come together, which is what I was planning on doing, and let you see how it progresses.
Or I can try to post a picture from the book of how it is supposed to look when it is finished?

Or, for those of you who want to know now, you could PM me your e-mail address and I can send you a picture, that way everyone , including me, :D is happy!

Joan 09-13-2009 06:55 AM

We just can't wait to see the finished quilt, Ninnie.
I'm just going to wait until I see "yours".
Seeing the step by step assembly is helpful and interesting.
BTW, I really like navy and white!

Oh Ninnie! That is one of my favorite patterns (especially in bue and white)!! It is on my to do list! A while ago, someone posted a link to Mary Koval Antique Quilts. She has a Burgoyne from 1854 for sale. Blue and white. The border is really interesting to.
Here's the link: http://www.marykovalantiquequilts.com/Quilt%20Gallery, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

I can't wait to see your's done!!! :D

Ninnie 09-13-2009 07:18 AM

That is a beauty, bearpaw, and I love that border, but mine doesn't look anything like that one

I guess it's not a Burgoyne Surrounded then? Interesting, I didn't know there were two with that name.
