How do I make a 48 inch square quilt top into a rectangle quilt

That is a lovely start to a gorgeous quilt. It looks like you may have to add rows and that could make the quilt look asymmetrical unless you add the rows equally above and below the centre blocks? I guess it would take using half blocks to both top and bottom, to maintain as much symmetry as possible, (if that it what you want) to lengthen it once you have decided on the width. Not sure how it would look. I would be interested to see how you do this. I have done something similar but I had to add rectangular blocks width ways to achieve the length I wanted. I will be looking out for your finished quilt. Best of luck! :)

I would add two more rows, then take the bottom 2 light green center blocks and another pink one on put them on the added rows. Hope this makes sense.

I would make multiple borders, making the borders on top and bottom a little wider. Your borders could be just plain strips of all your fabrics or rows of squares that look like the central area, or you could add a piano key border in the same colors making the top and bottom wider. It's such a lovely block arrangement, and the options are endless. I'm sure you will come up with something beautiful! Let us see whatever you decide!

There are any number of ways to rearrange the quarter log cabin units to make a border. Here are 2 that could be continued across the distance you have, here are 2.

You can make narrower borders on the sides and wider on the top and bottom. It does work well.

You could use your background fabric for wide top and bottom borders and do an appliqué on it.

You could add a row of square in a square blocks on point at the top and bottom. Or add a piece of background at the top and bottom and applique a vine and flowers. Be as creative as you want.

I think like hannajo shows in her friendship star quilt would really add to your quilt. You could put the smaller stacked coins all the way around your quilt & then add the longer ones to the top & bottom. I think it would look awesome that way. Good job on what you have already done.

She is making a 'thinking outside the block'. It looks the way it should, adding more of the same blocks all the way around to keep with the pattern. I have that pattern and hope to make it soon.

Just add an extra row on the top and bottom: green, pink, green. I also like Irish NY's suggestion using a larger border at the top and bottom and adding appliqued vines and flowers. That pattern is on my bucket list!

I did a similar type design for my daughter and to make it longer than wide I did another row of squares (or partial squares) at each end in the configuration that continued the pattern of the center portion. Sorry I don't have a picture.

I like Qm's suggestion. OR, just place rows of strips in the same color order as your blocks, separated by the cream-first pinks, then greens, then browns. On upper and lower ends only-not the sides. Then a cream border and binding.

I would make 3 more blocks cut in half. 3 at top 3 at bottom. Or similiar.

Depending on how much you want to add you could do smaller versions of the blocks and make borders out of those for top and bottom.
