I decided to make a quilt for myself to use on my side of the bed, since the one I've been using was made by my wife's grandmother about 70-80 years ago, and my wife was saying it needed a rest. :) I choose the "Wovens" from the "Garden Inspiration" pattern by Kansas Troubles of the Moda line. It measures 51" x 68". I used four 5" charm packs to create the simple alternating light and dark pattern of 10 x 14 rows.

After I was already into piecing it I noticed that some of the pieces were cut kind of wonky (i.e., the plaid pattern lines weren't parallel with the cut edge), so I probably should have squared them all to a slightly smaller size before piecing, but I guess we'll just say it's part of the "charm" of the quilt. :D The border, backing, and binding were all done with yardage from the same line of fabric.

you did a gread job, Eddie. your plaids aren't wonky. they're whimsical. always a good thing in a quilt. ;-)

manly, yes. but I like it, too. :-)

(Pop Quiz: who knows what i'm quoting?)

Lacelady 07-16-2009 02:53 PM

That 'problem' with the plaids gives it character. I like it.

wesing 07-16-2009 02:55 PM

Eddie -

Great job - it is nice and manly. Who says quilts have to be flowery?

Patrice -

You're quoting the Irish Spring guy's wife/gf re the scent of Irish Spring.

Eddie its great and I was told that the amish always put a mistake in their quilts because to presume to be perfect was not Godly.

Patrice~ Cow & Chicken?

*QuilterWannabee* 07-16-2009 03:19 PM

Great quilt, Eddie, l like the plaids!

sewsewquilter 07-16-2009 03:38 PM

Really Great quilt. The plaids look fine.

Nice avatar picture.

patricej 07-16-2009 03:54 PM

wesing was first to recognize the quote.

the thing about the Amish purposely making a mistake is a myth. it really irritates them, too, because it implies they think they could achieve absolutel perfection - which they know is impossible among human beings.

quiltluvr 07-16-2009 03:54 PM

What a beautiful addition to your "family". Nice choice of fabrics too.

I sell my stuff to a store in Kalona Iowa which is an Amish area. What i was told by the Amish that live there is that there are differant rules for differant areas of Amish. The color preferences vary from Iowa to Pennsylvania etc. In the books they sell about the Amish and their quilting this is mentioned. It is said to be a practice so God will see that they are not being prideful. If they put in a mistake then God will know and so will others that they practice humilty in all they do. I can't quote the book I got that from but it was in Yoder's where I sell my stuff. And I talked with some Amish ladies who were hand quilting in the local bank( it was fascinating watching them hand quilt) and the lady I talked to said yes they do put in a mistake on purpose to show humility.
But areas may vary on this.

Eddie love your quilt! I tend to shy away from plaids and stripes but I like the randomness of your quilt! Maybe i should explore the plaids again.....
I tend to want the plaids to be perfectly straight and i get frustrated when i can't get them to stay that way.

Chele 07-16-2009 04:51 PM

What a great quilt! I love the fabrics. It's a manly quilt, but very contemporary. You did a great job. Make more!

Kyiav10 07-16-2009 04:54 PM

I think it's a great quilt. And does have a touch of masculinity to it.

What a beaut.....uh, er, HANDSOME quilt, Eddie! And I may not watch enough TV to recognize Patrice's quote, but I like it too! I had to look reeeeeealy hard to find any "wonky" squares. And even then, it took me a while to figure out what you meant. So, it's all good!

kwhite 07-16-2009 05:00 PM

I do like it. It looks so cozy. And in our area the Amish do also put in a mistake on purpose. I have had convo's with them as well.

crkathleen 07-16-2009 05:06 PM

Really great quilt! The plaids are awesome!

barnbum 07-16-2009 05:07 PM

Oh--very nice! The colors are calming. I never worry about stripes--I just cut. :D

I asked my husband for years if I could make him a quilt--he always said no. UNTIL I asked if he wanted a Civil War reproduction quilt... THAT got his attention. I finished it a few months ago--just in time for summer.

Your avatar photo is wonderful.

sewnsewer2 07-16-2009 05:29 PM

Great job!

Jim's Gem 07-16-2009 05:40 PM

Great quilt Eddie!

Butterfli19 07-16-2009 05:46 PM

Very nice! Great colors and blends! Does your wife quilt too?

omak 07-16-2009 06:14 PM

So, I am guessing that the reason your quilt is "manly" is because you did it <g>
there are just straight lines.
the colors are STRONG.
the pattern is simple.
I have always figured if I didn't put any pink in it, I was doing REALLY good! LOL
Nice work ... is the backing flannel, also?
M-A-N-L-Y plaid ... <g>
A very inviting quilt, indeed!

amma 07-16-2009 06:23 PM

WoW!!! I love all of the plaids and that you used it for the binding!! Very masculine indeed  :D :D :D

Ducky 07-16-2009 06:32 PM

Love the quilt. You sure work fast, Eddie....

littlehud 07-16-2009 06:46 PM

She's actually just started her first one. She does machine embroidery a lot, but she decided to try a quilt now. She's working on a picnic quilt for us.

None of them are actually flannel, they're just woven cottons, although some of them (the striped ones) are a real heavy kind of cotton fabric, almost like a light weight denim.

quiltswithdogs 07-16-2009 10:11 PM

We are our own worst critics. Others will look at your great quilt as a whole and not notice any wonkiness. It looks very cozy... just enjoy it!

tlrnhi 07-16-2009 10:47 PM

Great job! I like it!

zyxquilts 07-16-2009 11:21 PM

It's great Eddie! And I agree w/Patrice - no wonkiness at all!

And that would be Irish Spring bar soap.

gcathie 07-17-2009 01:17 AM

Now that was brave working with strips and plaids.....they are hard ad it takes a lot of patience if you want them straight......I is awesome just the way it is....:-)

reneebobby 07-17-2009 02:35 AM

Very nice

bearpaw 07-17-2009 03:39 AM

Very nice! I think it's hard to find stripes or plaids that aren't wonky!

Bevanger 07-17-2009 04:16 AM

i love it. you did an awesome job!!! :D

tarib 07-17-2009 04:18 AM

Nice job of keeping the plaids and stripes straight....not an easy job. :D

sandpat 07-17-2009 04:35 AM

Very nice Eddie! I love the plaids but shy away from them for the reason you mention. Yours look great though..I didn't notice any "wonky" Oh and I love your new avatar!

sewjoyce 07-17-2009 04:40 AM

Very nice -- my hubby would love it!
