Maypole Dance

3 Attachment(s)
The members of my local guild's show team were given a challenge last year. We were told to pick one of the fabrics that was laying on a table without knowing why. I picked one called Nautical Blue. We were challenged to design and make a quilt with that fabric and only solid colors. The quilts will be displayed together in this year's show. There is no judging, it's just for fun.

This is the quilt that I came up with. I thought it looked sorta like a modern maypole so I've named it Maypole Dance. I'm just learning to free-motion quilt, and I wanted to practice feathers. I'm so glad this is finished... it was so repetitive!

This isn't a published pattern. I drafted it on graft paper. It's mostly half-square triangles.

I finished my first quilt about four years ago. It took me a year to do. I've had an HQ 16 for a year to do free-motion quilting. I haven't done very many quilts on it because I'm slow. This quilt took me five months to do.

Really? I thought the quilt police would complain that it is mixing modern with traditional... at least that's the complaint I've heard about my early-attic furnishings and new leather couch. ;)

nena 12-04-2013 08:11 AM

Never seen that pattern before. I love it.

raksmum 12-04-2013 08:44 AM

This is a great quilt, love the pattern and your quilting is so good! You say you are practicing?

works4me 12-04-2013 08:54 AM

5 months to finish the quilt? No way would I consider you slow. And just learning free-motion quilting? You don't give yourself enough credit.

Well done. It's beautiful.
