McFr♥sty ... the Scottish Snowman!! :)

5 Attachment(s)
Look what I found out in my snowy flowerbeds before Christmas!
Being all dressed up with a tartan fleece hat and scarf,
What else could I do, but give him a Scottish moniker? :)

So I brought him inside, working quickly to get some pics, before he had a major meltdown!! :)
At 25"x45" he fits nicely on a door, or makes for a narrow wall hanging.
Extra poly batting was set in place to give the snowbank more puff!
The fabric is silver on white, with silver metallic stitching for the quilting
Here's a better view, hanging on my design wall.

What else could I use for the FMQ but some snowballs?
His snowflake buttons are fussy cut hexies from the border fabric, then hand appliqued in place.

Nose and eyes were machine appliqued with a double blanket stitch.
The glint/white in his eyes is hand embroidered with regular floss.
I sewed on small buttons for McF's smile, and some gold metallic yarn gave him some hair!
*tip* once trimmed his hair was molting ... some hair spray was needed.
So Best Press to the rescue ... worked perfectly!!! :)

This was a commission, so he no longer lives with me.
... and yes, I am already making plans for my very own new and improved Fr♥sty! :D
You might think he looks a little familiar ... Here's his brother which was a Christmas gift last year!

These are really cute!! :)

How cute! And using Best Press as a hair spray - priceless!

I'd told a friend the problem and they said to get some hairspray out.
I said, oh no, I would be worried it might react and stain.
Then, there was that "aha moment"!
Plus ... instead of the hair flopping, I was able to get it to perk out, just like a real "do" with hairspray! :D

I love your Frosty! Great improvements!

QuiltnNan 12-30-2013 07:19 AM

what a super job!!!

IrishgalfromNJ 12-30-2013 07:27 AM

He is one handsome snowman. You put some many cute touches on him. Love it.

mighty 12-30-2013 07:34 AM

Sew cute!!!!!

BeckySt 12-30-2013 07:41 AM

Very cute. Love everything you did on this quilt.

Tartan 12-30-2013 07:51 AM

Very cute! I think he needs a table runner to match. MSQC posted a Snowman table runner tutorial last week using the hexie ruler.

Actually, as I sewed snowballed corners I made HSTs with the trimmings ... something will come!

SouthPStitches 12-30-2013 08:29 AM

I love him and you obviously had a ball creating him!

Anael 12-30-2013 08:30 AM

I knew I've seen his brother before :D You did a great job on Frosty 2! How did you do the silver metallic thread?
Your snowballs FMQ is great!

QuiltingNinaSue 12-30-2013 08:42 AM

Love the McSnowman! Now if he had a kilt....food for thought. Excellent FMQing snowballs!!! Love the hair do! And his eyes, mouth an vest buttons, and scarf and hat....perfect job!

Kathy T. 12-30-2013 08:47 AM

Yeah, what she said!

JenniePenny 12-30-2013 09:23 AM

Very nice job! Love the special touches you incorporated, as well as the quilting.

oksewglad 12-30-2013 11:10 AM

I can't but compare the two and see how much you've "improved" the Scottish one! Love the unity of the use of plaids; the brighter buttons in the smile, plus the placement of an extra one or two to give a bigger smile; the snowflake hexies in a blue that pulls from the border; the red piping border versus the black; the quilting details. All in all just fantastic.

QM 12-30-2013 11:16 AM

Darling snowbrothers.

busy fingers 12-30-2013 11:23 AM

What a cute snowman. Great work.

Your snowballs FMQ is great!

I just did it as regular machine stitched quilting.
Had some "technical difficulty" in the thread to run thru right, and not fray and break.
A trip to my sewing machine store for a "how to" lesson solved that.
However, I stayed there til I had it done. Just In Case ... as I didn't want to get home and be back into problems with it. :D

All ... Thanks! for all your positive comments and notations of this year's model!
As SouthPStitches said ... I had a "ball" creating him!
Do you think that OKSGlad left out any of the updates? Thanks ... you are always "sharp" in seeing the whole picture! :)

KathyT. ... yes, mine just might see a sister join the family!

You can help create 3!! ...
Please help make "my" Fr♥sty or Fr♥stina by leaving your suggestions!
I see this one being a more elegant version ... maybe a taffeta and/or velvet scarf and/or hat?
I've started to build it on my portable design wall with fabrics and paper cut outs, but not a lot of clarity as to "what" at this point.

JeanieG 12-30-2013 12:06 PM

You outdid yourself on this one QuiltE! Wonderful! Where did you get the pattern, or did you just improvise? I might have to make them for my sibling exchange next year??? They loved the lighted Christmas Trees! Was this a lot of work?

leatheflea 12-30-2013 12:23 PM

Cute snowman, I think I need one!

SewExtremeSeams 12-30-2013 12:35 PM

Very, very cute!

mirabelle 12-30-2013 12:35 PM

Very cute, love the Scottish touch on this one, perfect job on the quilting:thumbup:

QuiltE 12-30-2013 01:23 PM

JeanieG ... you know me well enough, a LOT of improvisation!! :) The first challenge was finding the "right" fabric. The most work was the snowball quilting ... very time consuming. A few practice sessions too get in the "groove" and then I just had to keep my wits about me!! I really hated to part with him but I do know he has a good home!

MiraB ... coming from the Mistress of Quilting, I am absolutely thrilled with your compliment! :) The tartan was leftovers from a housecoat I made a few years ago. You really do need to come and experience SNOW IRL! :)

works4me 12-30-2013 01:36 PM

So very frosty-liscious! Wonderful work.

A female should have ruby red lips, don't you think? And eyelashes. Maybe she could even be winking. :)

LadyElisabeth 12-30-2013 01:48 PM

That is the cutest snowman! The fabric is perfect for it

Love it ... Fr♥sty-liscious! It might even become the name for #3 in the family!
You always have great ideas for unique touches ;) ......... I think your bird(s) just might show up this time round!

Sheilz 12-30-2013 11:09 PM

He is awesome! This is such a cute quilt. Wonderful and cheery.

gabeway 12-31-2013 05:38 AM

Looking great!

MamaBear61 12-31-2013 05:48 AM

QuiltE, McFrosty is very, very cute. I wonder if he doesn't need a "country" cousin, maybe with some overalls and a pitch fork :-)

I went to your sewing store a few weeks before Christmas and they are wonderfully friendly and helpful there, but I still haven't made any decisions.

Jordan 12-31-2013 06:04 AM

He is soooooo cute!!

Thanks MamaBear .... perhaps we should add in a jersey, holstein and ayrshire! :) I have the background fabric for mine, and it seems to be calling for elegance though.:)
Did you find the model you want? .... who did you work with that day? You might as well go for it, as you'll have lots of snowy winter days to master the new machine! Keep me posted .... when you next come, how about a coffee GTG? ....... How about this coming Monday or Tuesday? :D BTW ... Lens has batting at 50% for a New Year's Eve special!

Correct me if I am wrong but I think her name is Nancy (co-owner?). They were very pleased to hear that I had came to them as a referral, it made them both break out in a BIG smile, Nick especially. I am floundering between the Bernina 780 and the 880 (new model this fall) There is quite a price difference and although I want a GREAT machine I don't want to buy more machine than I will ever use :-) I will let you know when and if I move forward.
