Who would have thought that rag quilts were so incredibly fast and easy to make??? I'm not a fan of the long arm, so my quilts have been hand stitched or stitch in the ditch or QAYG but now I have found another great way to make a quilt and still be so pleased with the outcome. Here is my- TAH! DAH! first rag quilt ever and the first of many many to come- baby quilts, lap quilts, etc. Hope you like it. It is a birthday gift and I didn't know the person liked turquoise until recently, so, whew!, she'll like this.
But really, rag quilts ROCK! |
Looks great, soft and cuddly. I want to try this with a bunch on Minky scraps I have. Directions?
I love this quilt. The colors are fabulous. Great job.

Like the colors a lot and your choice of fabric design.
Great job. I should get brave! |
Great Job!!!! I have one, but don't the time to start it.
aren't rag quilts the best!!!! i also found a reversible tote pattern that one side is raggy and the inside is regular. i love it! plus it is so much fun to make. i like to do my snipping while watching tv. word of advice- invest in some snippers. i lost my small set and bought a larger one and hate it!

Very nice. I have made a couple and love them for a quick project. I love the color of this. fantastic.
I have never made one bit it is on my to do list. Yours is just lovely.
Came out great!
Pattern is: 8x8 squares for top and backing, 6x6 squares for between the top and bottom, sandwiched the back, batting, and top together, sewed a criss cross pattern corner to corner to secure the three layers, plunked down the squares in a pattern, sewed each row together, and then clipped with my spring loaded clippers. Washed, dried, and voila! ( that's 'There you go' in French LOL). Oh, yes, I also went to Missouri Star and checked out their youtube tutorial, they have the greatest projects.

Here is the tutorial I used for making my rag quilt. I just adjusted amounts to make an adult lap quilt. I used 1 yd ( .90cm) of 4 different flannel patterns for the top. I used 2 1/2 yd (2.25m) for the flannel needed for the backing. Sorry, I can't tell you how much I needed for the batting because I had so much left over from other projects. This amount of material made a 6 squares across/9 squares down lap quilt for an adult. It could also be big enough for a twin topper or a really big baby/crib quilt.

Very pretty, good idea for me to use up pieces of batting.
Your quilt is beautiful. I love those colors. I made some totes using some of those fabrics and some others. Love it.
It looks wonderful. I love your colors.

Yes...when I also discovered how easy they were, I made 7 of them. My poor hands from all that clipping. But I was able to use them for some wedding gifts to acquaintances.
Love the quilt! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the link!
I've been wanting to do a rag - now you've inspired me even more! Can't wait to start. Yours looks wonderfull. Pretty colors, soft and cuddly. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful colors~!

Beautiful colors!
I love doing rag quilts. The best investment I made was buying the scissors for rag quilts. They make it so much easier on your thumb and hand :) |
Great job and I love the colors!
they are nice
Pretty quilt. I love the colors.
Beautiful !! Looks soooo soft & cuddlely !! :-D
I hate cutting the edges.
Oh that's pretty!!! Love your colors. I want to do one someday. Great job! :D

The best combo on these I have found is flannel front and back with wool wadding... sooo light, sooo warm and yet not over warm and very very snuggly.
the snippers are a great investment if you like these. I always use the stretch stich on my machine when joing the quilted blocks. I just dyed a bunch of flannel in indigo in varying shades and have planned a raggy quilt to use it all up. I think I am going to quilt some motifs, hearts or something in the blocks rather than cris crossing. The more you wash these the softer they get but only wash them on thier own. They shed especially on the first wash like crazy. It's worth cleaning out the lint trap on the drier midway through the cycle. Lovely quilt and a great QAYG method. |
Gorgeous! I love the colors! Thanks for posting!
Looks great. Never made one maybe I should
They are so cuddly and so cool. But isn't it great when you sew the last row, you are done quilting it too.
It's beautiful!!! Love the colors.
Thanks for this idea. I have a lot of batting bits stuffed into a box. This will be the perfect way to get rid of...sorry, perfect way to make something lovely with them. I have a bunch of small white pieces of this and that, they will make a real nice bed for Fredrica, who is a white, long haired Persian and sheds like mad.

Love the colors. Nice job.
Your quilt is beautiful. I love the colors you chose.
I have made several for my great grand kids and they love them and I love making them. So easy to do, and easy to hide mistakes.
I also made a strip rag quilt using 3" strips longwise. It turned out great http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-107067-1.htm

Yummy colors. The baby quilts I have made for the last 5 or 6 yrs. have all been rag quilts..I don't use batt in the middle, I use a white or coordinating flannel square instead.
What a fun quilt! Love the fabrics & colors.
