DH is down with the flu so all the holiday plans have been canceled - no one can enter our home

upside i just made a mini jane block its A5.

the first pic is the mini block that finishes at 2.5 inches and the 2nd pic is the mini block next to the traditional size jane block that finishes at 4.5 inches.

i'm thinking i need to make a mini jane quilt to match american jane.

i'm gonna try making a mini triangle this weekend.

Sorry you had to cancel your plans. Hope DH is well soon.

Iluv2quilt 12-24-2009 06:45 PM

That is remarkable in that size! Nice, accurate work Klue!! It looks so teeny compared to the 4.5" one.

thismomquilts 12-24-2009 06:58 PM

How in the world do you do such nice work on such a small scale!?!

i know, it doesn't really look small until you see it next to the small 4.5 inch block.

thank you for the lovely compliment. its done by paper piecing, i would never be able to do it otherwise.

its paper pieced in 3 sections and then you join the 3 sections together to form the entire block.

I hope you have had your flu shots and that your husband stays hydrated and rests! How does one go about reducing the size of squares?

i have dear jane and electric quilt software - this makes changing sizes very easy.

i have not had a flu shot but i'm well versed in infectious disease. i have a PhD in Molecular Microbiology and my research focus is infectious disease.

Beautifully Done!!! :D:D:D

They are great Klue!

Maksi 12-27-2009 03:06 AM

I think a 4,5 inch block is very small, and your mini is even smaller! And made to perfect.

Your blocks are just great Kelly. Glad we are'nt making them that small! You would probably make it easy for us if we were. Sorry you're DH is ill. I came down with a head cold/flu on C-day. I had the flu shot too and am never sick.

I would like to learn paper piecing. Is it Hard? Dumb question right.

no its not hard but laying down that first piece is a bit of a struggle for some people.

the real plus side to paper piecing is once you get the grasp of it you can paper piece any block under the sun unlike traditional piecing where you continually have to learn different methods.

here is a link to a very popular tute on paper piecing. its for a very simple jane block and is a good jumping off point.

Thanks. It looks great. I would love to see your mini when you are done. I now remember you posting the triangle. Sorry I forgot. :-)

BlueChicken 01-01-2010 03:23 PM

You're a legend! Is there anything you can't do?!? LOL ;-)

There's going to be some bits in the mini where the seam allowance is bigger than the actual bit showing!

i know, i printed out I9 yesterday and i was just shaking my head.

i'm not to worried about the paper piecing blocks since the paper helps to hold everything in place until its done.

i'm gonna kick myself when i do the applique blocks.

i hope to catch up with the mini jane blocks so i can keep it in line with the standard size jane that i'm doing.

i'd like to finish them both around the same time since they will be exactly alike except for size.

LOL

I was looking at those and wondering how you'd do them! LOL Are you going to needleturn or fusible them?

I'd be investing in one of those big magnifying things I think, the type they advertise for old ladies to do needlework with.. the ones the size of a dinner plate.

martha jo 01-01-2010 03:45 PM

You are truly amazing. I am sitting fretting over trying the larger size. You might try to backbaste the applique for the small size.

i have the magnifying swing arm lamp. i use them at the lab every day and then when i got into doing micro quilting/stippling i purchased one for the sewing machine.

the ones that they make specially for the sewing machine don't have as good a lens.

i love it and i've been using it to help with the mini's.

for the appliques i think i'm going to use a mixture of applique techniques just like with the regular janes. some needleturn, some fusing, some praying to the quilting gods for mercy - that kinda thing.

as i go thru them i'll post and give instructions on how i do with those blocks.

ROTFPMSL

We don't do valentine's day, otherwise I'd be tempted to try that line.

I was taught by someone so don't have written instructions and don't know how to put pictures up yet but plan to learn when daughter gets back from Boston, so will try to explain. Draw your pattern on wrong side of fabric, cut your fabric slightly larger than pattern size and place with right side up on right side of fabric. Baste slightly outside the pattern line on back, coming through and catching your fabric piece on front. When finished, cut two or three stitches on front and start needleturning and just cut a stitch at a time ahead as you needle turn around your piece. It is especially helpful when pieces are small and you can cut the layers as you go when there is overlap. Because the fabric is secure until you clip, it doesn't stretch. Maybe someone has better instructions but I find it works well for small applique pieces.

i think you explained it beautifully, i can picture every thing in my mind.

i'm going to try it with a big piece and start working my way down to smaller and smaller.

thank you so much
