I am almost embarassed to show all of you my mom's placemats that I've made for her. I'm not a skilled quilter and this was my first attempt outside the SITD. Hopefully there aren't any quilt police out there. Want honest feedback on what I could have done better. Sorry for the bad photography and poor lighting. Thanks in advance.

I think they are lovely and would be happy to display them on my table!

I think it looks great. The best thing about quilting is the sky is the limit. We each see things differently and therefore every quilt, placemat, or what ever is unique.

Give yourself a pat on the back, I would put them on my table any day!

1234Irene 08-03-2011 07:45 PM

Personally I think they are pretty cool looking. I, too, would use them on my table, in a heartbeat!

blueangel 08-03-2011 07:46 PM

Looks nice

They look great, your mother will smile everytime she uses them. You will find the more you quilt you will do better each time. I made my nephew some placemats, I didn't think they were good enough to give. I showed them to my sister. She wanted to know where my mistakes were. I couldm't find them for the life of me. We both sat there and laughed. When I sew I want everything perfect, my sister enjoys it and does not care about her mistakes, she just wants to get it done. We drive each other crazy when it comes to quilting. She always tells me I could make five or six quilts with all the tearing apart I do. We each enjoy quilting in a different way.

Must be the "bad photography", I don't see a problem. I think they're pretty!

babyfireo4 08-03-2011 09:38 PM

I think they look great! Your quilting looks much better than mine does.

Leota 08-03-2011 09:39 PM

Looks good to me...
You did your best and that all you can do...

Jammin' Jane 08-03-2011 09:56 PM

It looks very nice to me! Nice job!
Give yourself a pat on the back!

trif 08-03-2011 09:59 PM

Ok honest feedback: we as quilters in general are too tough on ourselves. If they don't look perfect to YOU it's ok you will improve in your own eyes with practice. The real world LOVES the time you gave to make something for them from your heart.

Bottom line: they look great!!!

marscrafter 08-03-2011 10:53 PM

I love your shell quilting, really pretty. :-)

SueDor 08-04-2011 01:42 AM

QUILTNMO 08-04-2011 02:06 AM

you did a nice job and i like the blues

quilterella 08-04-2011 02:33 AM

Beautiful. I like the way you used the clamshell for quilting to give it some dimension, rather than just SID...great job.

justlooking 08-04-2011 02:33 AM

Nice job, love the placemats!

katesnanna 08-04-2011 03:05 AM

I'd be happy to use them on my table.
Where do you think there is a problem? We quilters are our own worst critics.

hannajo 08-04-2011 03:36 AM

I like it! Out of curiosity, did you use regular batting? I'm working on place mats myself.

It sounds like we are in similar situations. I realize I just need to work on basics for a while - cutting, piecing, binding. And this place mat inspires me to try fancier quilting. Thanks for posting this

bjrusty 08-04-2011 03:39 AM

I don't see anything wrong, they're pretty. Barb

[quote=hannajo]I like it! Out of curiosity, did you use regular batting? I'm working on place mats myself.

Hannajo....I just used a thin polyester batting as I didn't want them to be too thick.

I want to thank everyone for their compliments and encouragement. I just see all the beautiful work that everyone on this board does and I hope someday that I'm half as good. I know...practice, practice, practice.

Thank you for the compliment. My dog is our BIG baby. He's a Great Pyrenes and right now only weighs 162. In the winter, he'll get close to 200 lbs. Fills up the backseat of the car.

psychonurse 08-04-2011 04:48 AM

They are great. I would use them.

Boy... For the great work and effort from the heart you sure do doubt yourself. Turn each of those around. 'Check out the effort I put into a loving gift for my mom.' ...and... 'I am a new quilter giving it my best'... and maybe... 'check out the photos'.
You did a great job. My first quilts were strip quilts, Trip Around the World to be exact, and they didn't come out quite this good. Kudos to you!!!

Denise

Thank you Denise for the "pep" talk. I guess I've always been a doubting tom when it came to my abilities. You're all great at encouraging me.
