Mom's Prairie Rose Quilt
3 Attachment(s)
My mother turns 88 on November 13. She has always loved the prairie rose so I decided it was time she got her own prairie rose quilt.
I found a photo that I liked and adapted it to applique. I used a couple of different applique stitches around the pieces. I used variegated thread in yellow, green, and pink in the appropriate areas. I had some old fabric that was a soft green and had what appeared to be wild roses on it but I really didn't feel it was right for the backing. When I saw this backing fabric in the store, I knew I had hesitated for a reason. Several different stitches were used for the quilting and I even made my own label fabric out of the backing fabric then my own label. I turned the backing to the front, hand stitched it in place and then used an applique stitch to pretty it up on the front. I have put a dowel through the hanging sleeve and attached copper wire to each end using thumb tacks. Now it is super easy for Mom to hang the quilt. The only other thing I will do is buy one of those 3M magic hangers so she won't even need a nail. :) Mom knows about the quilt. She even approved one of the pink fabrics. I think she will be pleased. |
I like it.

How special!!! ... and what a lovely tribute to and for your Mom.
You have done a great job of capturing the Prairie Rose in fabric. Bonus ... to have it hang-ready, complete with the wall hanger! :) |
Thank you everyone. Despite obsessing over every little thing with this small quilt, I enjoyed the process. I have a feeling I won't be waiting until her birthday to give it to her.

Oh, what a beautiful thing to do for your Mother! I'm sure she will be so happy to look at it on her wall. It has a warm feeling about it.
I'm somewhat jealous because I never even get a birthday card from my DC or DGC. We always had birthday parties and such when they were growing up and are a loving family. They think a text is just as good. NOT!! I know you're Mother is so proud of you and loves you very much!! |
What a great gift.
|
That is so pretty!! Mom will love it!
|
Thank you for the wonderful comments. It is quite different from my usual quilts which tend towards Halloween. :)
QuiltE - it finished up at 20 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches tall. That means it can go pretty much anywhere. quiltjoey - we don't generally give a card and gift but we always visit on or very close to the birthday, frequently bringing lunch. My Mom is not crafty at all. She has always loved seeing my work so a couple of years ago I gave her a vase that I etched. She was thrilled. I've been showing my parents the quilts and cross stitch that I've been doing and they are both amused but impressed with my craft addiction so I know she will be pleased to receive this mini quilt. |
Beautiful, and I am sure your Mom will love it!
|
Thanks for the update ... a nice size ... big enough to be seen, small enough to go most anywhere!
And the best part, nice and cheery, taking a cue from her personal love for the subject flower. .............. and yes, the delicateness of this is quite the contrast from your normal Halloween work!! :D |
so soft and feminine...I really like it
|
Wow that is beautiful works4me, don't wait for her birthday, it is too precious a gift to wait. I am sure your mother will love it and know that your love for her went into every stitch.
|
Oh my, that's one gorgeous wall hanging!!! A true labour of love!!
She knows and approved the fabrics, why wait? Give it to her so she can show it off on her birthday. |
Beautiful!!
|
If you obsessed over every step of the process in making this quilt, it certainly was worth it!!
|
Lovely applique.
|
Beautiful.
|
Thank you. I brought it to work today and have it on my wall to show off for a short bit. My office walls are kind of a dark sage and it looks like it belongs there. Oh well, I just might have to make another quilt for me. :)
We are visiting my parents this weekend so Mom will receive her birthday present a bit early. |
Those flowers are so beautiful that they looked real, made me want to just lightly touch a petal.
