Every year on this day I think back and reflect on who my mom was, shed many tears, and wish we'd gotten to know each other as adults, instead of parent/child. She's been gone for 7 years today, taken away from us by breast cancer.

My quilt lives on the back of my sewing chair for when I get cold in here; I see it all the time, and it reminds me where and who I come from.

These two quilts were made for me and my brother (though Mom didn't get the chance to finish them, my aunt finished them for us). He has requested I hold onto his until he's more stable and mature... has a home of his own, and isn't afraid of the quilt being damaged or destroyed.

I wish I had these fabrics to incorporate into my own scrap quilts...

These were both long-arm quilted with dragonflies, as my mom loved them, and I have taken on not only her passionfor quilting, but her passion for dragonflies as well - they're all over my house (and one on my back) now!

Those are beautiful quilts. So sorry to hear your Mother. I had a Grandmother (similar situation) and she taught me to quilt and I have one of her only quilts. I think it is my most prized possession's.

So sorry about your loss. I lost my mom 8 yrs ago and I know how hard it is, especially on the anniversary. She left behind 2 gorgeous quilts that will warm you and comfort you just as though her arms were wrapped around you.

dakotamaid 01-28-2010 06:23 PM

These are absolutely beautiful!! Your mom was an excellent piercer!!

I especially like the first one, yours. I've seen that pattern somewhere and know that it was a challenge to make.

Do you know the name of the pattern?

bibiche 01-28-2010 06:23 PM

I'm so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, I understand it too well. What a wonderful gift your mother gave you. It must bring you great comfort, and both quilts are truly beautiful.

My grandma taught me to sew when I was a teenager and she would buy me fabrics every week to make clothes for me, usually our own designs. I later got married and left Puerto Rico to NY. She never sewed again after I left, but at the age of 65 she learned to crochet. She made many small doilies and one large table cloth with pineapple stitch all around. she called it her master piece. One day I got a package in the mail and her master piece was in it. She said she had made it for me all along. I treasure that table cloth and is always where I can see it.

I love both your quilts.

Kara 01-28-2010 06:27 PM

I wish I did. I know my aunt does, and I'll ask her tomorrow; hopefully I'll remember to report back.

These are beautiful...what a great legacy from your mother, and a way to keep her memory and love very much alive.

liblueeyes 01-28-2010 06:37 PM

These quilts are absolutely awesome as is the story about your mom....

annieshane 01-28-2010 06:52 PM

I just love these quilts of love, especially, the first one. The patterns are awesome and the number of colors just flow so beautifully. I also lost my mother approx 8 years ago. I have a piece of fabric from which I made her a mumu to wear because she could not stand clothes touching her skin. Some day that piece of fabric will go into a very special quilt. Right now, I just haven't found the special pattern that deserves my mom's fabric. I do hope you receive a lot of comfort from wrapping in this loving gift from your mom. Your brother sounds as if he is also very special. You both have my prayers as you make this terrible adjustment.

quiltinggrandmaca 01-28-2010 06:52 PM

Those quilts are magnificent especially the first one. It really pops out at you when you see it, what a wonderful memory of your Mom.

Wonderful quilts. I liked hearing your story about these quilts and your Mom's love for both of you.

laparshall 01-29-2010 06:14 AM

Ladygen: So sorry for your loss. Your story is very touching and your mom's quilts are beautiful. I can picture your mom making them and putting so much love into them for her children. It is wonderful that you have taken an interest in something she obviously loved doing. Kudos to your aunt for finishing these quilts for you and your brother.

Naturalmama 01-29-2010 08:19 AM

They are beautiful. I'm so sorry for your loss though. It is nice to have something to cuddle with from her - how comforting!

fsmcm 01-29-2010 08:43 AM

These are beautiful. I understand. I lost a very dear friend just over a year ago. During a stay with her to care for her, she asked me if I would finish the quilts she had started for her 2 grandchildren. It took me 6 months to bring myself to do it and when I sent them off I cried. I have since made a quilt in her memory. That's about all I can write right now. Thanks for sharing.

Naturalmama 01-29-2010 08:46 AM

**hugs** to both of you.

patchitpat 01-29-2010 08:50 AM

Those quilts are absolutely gorgeous. I can't imagine how long it took to do the one on the top. Thank you for sharing and for sharing your story. My mom has been gone now 16 years and I still have the quilt I made with all of her old clothes, I just made patchwork out of them but it sits on top of my childhood hopechest for my daughter someday. I know she will appreciate it so much, she was l6 when her nana died.
