I remember learning to make bound buttonholes. Either in home ec or 4-H, probably in the late 50's or early 60's. Never turned a collar, but did make a new one for a barn jacket one time. Only part that was worn was the collar. Never could figure out why?!
Brings to mind a saying from the 30's: Probably learned from my grandparents who lived through the depression.
Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or Do without!!!
Too bad we strayed so far afield before we realized how true these words really are!

Love those, and how wonderful to have such a sweet daughter-in-law! Our home ec teacher in the 1960's taught us that a well-made garment HAD to have bound buttonholes, or it would be too cheap-looking to be caught dead in. I'm in the process of making a quilted handbag that has 3 buttons, and I'm putting bound buttonholes on it. I still feel Mrs. Bullard looking over my shoulder when I sew.

That is why when I went looking for a new sewing machine, the most important accessory was how good the buttonholes were. No more bound for me.

Just have to share.. I was doing some hand work last night and needed a new needle. Look what I found! Yes, the maker started in business in 1698 and the wrapper proclaims that they are over two centuries old. Guess we'd better make that three now! I get all the old sewing stuff from deceased relatives.

How cool is that! I'll have to go through some of my old stuff and see what else I have.
