I also found a site where you do not use pins but poke the material into the styrofoam with a butter knife. My daughter and I made some of these several years ago and they do not last well.

you need to use pins and they will last just fine. it takes approximately 200 pins for each oirnament I just bought cheap ones from walmart and they worked just fine!!
