More Strings!

I swear they are multiplying overnight! This is a different take on the Arkansas Crossroads pattern . It will go to our guild to be quilted and then gifted when needed.

I used ancient tissue patterns cut into 6 1/2 inch squares, as my foundation. I shortened my stitch length and found the tissue paper was very easy to remove. The cream background fabric was a 100% cotton sheet from Goodwill. Thanks for looking.

That is really pretty! Yes, I agree! Scraps certainly multiply!

Tartan 01-29-2019 06:20 AM

Great scrap top!

sprice 01-29-2019 06:53 AM

Nice job and a great use of scraps.

AngeliaNR 01-29-2019 07:01 AM

You had me at "strings"! Beautiful quilt. :)

misspriss 01-29-2019 07:26 AM

Tissue paper is nice, but, if you check with your Dr. you might be able to get the end of the roll of the paper they use
on the exam tables. I did.

Boston1954 01-29-2019 07:28 AM

I just went into my batik scraps and used some then made more. Yikes. Some lucky person will love that.

LindaJane 01-29-2019 07:31 AM

I use old phone book pages for my paper on string blocks. I really like this pattern you used. I have about forty 6.5 blocks made so far and still haven't made a dent in the scrap piles.

Kitsie 01-29-2019 08:11 AM

Love everything about it!! Thanks for showing!

Like this "different take". It's a fabulous quilt pattern. Somebody is going to get some good use out of it. Thanks for posting.

Love your strings quilt. You are right-I think strings and scraps multiply overnight.

zozee 01-29-2019 11:03 AM

Very vibrant! Love the bright colors and your take on the pattern.

That's a fantastic use of your scraps and strings!

redquilter 01-29-2019 05:07 PM

I love this! Really eye catching and interesting.

QuiltE 01-29-2019 09:05 PM

Very pretty and gentle looking.
Some of the string quilts are just too dizzying for me to truly appreciate all the work.
This shows the strings and all your work of quite nicely.

QuiltMom2 01-30-2019 03:00 AM

Thanks for posting. I am "Scrap Queen" and sew with a church group. So String patterns are always nice, did one quilt the first year, two the next, have two ( and with your pattern, three) in the works this year.

What a great alternate pattern to Arkansas Crossroad and a wonderful scrappy. I know what you mean about the stash of strings. It seems I add more than I can use. That will make a wonderful charity donation.

helou 01-30-2019 04:28 AM

very nice use of strings!

My thoughts exactly! Quite often, string quilts are just too busy looking for my liking ... they lack any artistic element. But this string quilt is very nice indeed. The alternating (white) blocks give the eye a place to rest. well done! Thank you for sharing.

Homespun 01-30-2019 05:45 AM

Very pretty! I love scrappy!

PKGranny 01-30-2019 06:25 AM

I love this string version rather than the squares. I have so many and this is the inspiration to start putting them together. I am assuming your finished block is 24"??? so this will make a large quilt. Thanks for sharing.

sJens 01-30-2019 07:34 AM

Love your string quilt. Good way to use up scraps.

GingerK 01-30-2019 03:35 PM

PKGranny, no my finished block was 12 inches. I used pieces of very old tissue patterns cut to 6 1/2 inches for the foundation of the string blocks. I laid and pinned the first one kitty corner and then added strips on both sides. I then trimmed to 6 1/2 inches. I shortened my stitch length and the tissue was quite fragile so tore away very easily. I then put 4 of those together for the 12 1/2 in string block.

For the alternate block I made eight 3 1/2 inch (unfinished) HST's by putting together four 4 inch coloured squares and four 4 inch background squares, sewn and trimmed. The corner squares were 3 1/2 inches unfinished and the center square was 6 1/2 inches unfinished. It was my design decision to not mix up the HST's. I felt the top was busy enough as it was. I did add borders in the same background colour because I could not find any other fabric that complimented the design. The final size was 90 inches square.

but there is no reason why you could not make 24 inch blocks. You'd only need half as many!!

Nice string quilt.

Rhonda Lee 01-30-2019 07:08 PM

Love to use those strings. Your quilt is delightful. Job well done.

Grandma Peg 01-30-2019 08:09 PM

Very pretty scrap quilt

Rose_P 01-30-2019 08:37 PM

That looks great!

Kris P 01-31-2019 04:32 AM

I like your version of Arkansas Crossroads. I might have to save this idea for later. I've been trying to work my way through the scrap bins, and while those bins are emptying, the string bin fills up with bits from those bins.

Belfrybat 01-31-2019 07:31 AM

Wonderful design. I would never have thought of using strings on an Arkansas Crossroads, but this one rocks. Thanks for sharing.

mhollifiel 01-31-2019 04:13 PM

Ginger,
You ROCK! This is a great string quilt in every way. I am loving your use of a nice cream Goodwill 100% cotton sheet as well. Lots of fabric in those things and they make great backs!

tuckyquilter 01-31-2019 04:47 PM

Love It...

JJean 01-31-2019 04:50 PM

What a fantastic quilt!

Judith1005 01-31-2019 05:20 PM

Awesome!! That was great use of your Thrift Store backing and lots and lots of strings. I do think they get together at night and multiply. lol

love to sew 01-31-2019 06:19 PM

That is a great pattern for strings and scraps. AHHH I must put it on the "list to make"

BrendaK 01-31-2019 08:58 PM

Super. Gets my juices going. Made a copy of your picture and soon I will be ready to go. BrendaK
