all that fabric. wow

sewnsewer2 01-08-2010 08:24 PM

Super haul!!!!!

Elisabrat 01-08-2010 08:30 PM

NOTE: I had a total brain to finger freeze in the first statement. Its closer to 2,500 to 3,000 lbs not tons of fabric each month. They would love to have the claim to fame of that large of a number but all in all if you think about it.. that is still a whole LOAD of fabric. There were many hits to the website they have by our board members (THANK YOU!) and also I met a woman whose sister lives on the east coast and read about this here and sent her to check it out. I managed to bring home about 10 yrds of different solid color blender fabrics today too. I never have blenders. It was a terrific fabric/sewing month for me. Yipee!

oksewglad 01-08-2010 08:46 PM

This is just mind boggling!

Janstar 01-08-2010 08:53 PM

I looked it up and we have nothing like that anywhere. You guys are super lucky!

cumberlandquiltchick 01-08-2010 11:34 PM

Those are high end designer samples/remenants! wow! When I had my int.des.business & workroom they use to bring those around and I HAD TO BUY THE SAMPLES! in order to sell their fabrics! WOW!

Olivia's Grammy 01-09-2010 06:10 AM

I checked and nothing here in Georgia. At our Guild meetings we take in fabric we don't want and give it away.

BarbieQ 01-09-2010 06:58 AM

Where can i go to one of these fabric giveaways? Up here in Northern Maine we only have Marden's salvage or run to Wally world. Even a fab swap between friends yeilds the same stash.

Boston1954 01-09-2010 07:51 AM

Good gosh!! Why don't they donate it to some quilting group that makes quilts for people who have lost their homes to fire or something? What a waste. I am so glad that you took some home to use.

Sugarpumpkin 01-09-2010 10:46 AM

ESQ, I saw this too late! LOL

Hubby is working on our car so I don't have one to drive even if I could get an appt. I hope you have fun today! Post pictures of all the great things you get!

Lets plan to go in February :D

Deezie 01-09-2010 11:07 AM

Wow.... thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out.

dmackey 01-09-2010 11:50 AM

This is a fabulous idea for anywhere in the country!

I guess we would have to research manufacturers/distributors in our own areas and call to see what they do with fabrics they want to discard.

I wonder how this group pays for their warehouse, utilities, vehicles, transport costs, etc. I see they have volunteers, but someone has to foot the bill for the costs involved.

If anyone is going to go there, please ask these questions. I am very interested in how this is done and it might be worth the effort to start one in New England.

hapytlk 01-09-2010 12:04 PM

What am I missing? Where do you pick it up? Wow. What a mother lode~ amazing.

melodylamour 01-09-2010 12:30 PM

I am bumming big time for sure. I live in SW Florida. I don't know of any such thing like that in here. Not even any huge fabric warehouses. Just not fairrrrrrrrrrrrr!

dmackey 01-09-2010 12:36 PM

Fabmo.org has a mailing list. I found it under the links listing on the left side of the page.

We have nothing like that in South Dakota. We did have a Fabric Warehouse that closed. But that rqg4ic was kind pf expen. We have Wally World which seems to only deal in polar fleece, A Hancock, and a Quilt Connection that is kind of spendy.

CarolLady 01-09-2010 03:50 PM

wow! I looked on the site but it looks like this in only in CA. Is that correct or does someone know about this being done in other states?
Thanks
Carol

MaryAnna 01-09-2010 04:05 PM

Kind Regards,

Esqmommy 01-09-2010 04:25 PM

Okay ladies, just got back. I picked up a large back, and almost all of it is HOME DEC fabric..I can make pillows, totes, etc, but not likely to work in a quilt. I will have to wait until Monday to post pix because I'm not in my usual computer system, and I have a hard time posting on this computer. I got about 20 squares of bright fabrics that are about 5 inch squares. Red, turquoise, purple and green. I thought they would be fun to put together with some sort of print and would make a pretty quilt. They are linen, so it'll be interesting.

Next time, I hope to find more cottons. Very very few cottons. Linda, you must have picked out the majority of them!!!

Sugar, let's definitely go together - be way more fun to have a partner for the drive there and back. There's also a quilting shop called Eddie's quilting Bee, it's a huge quilting store we could stop at!!

BarbieQ 01-09-2010 05:03 PM

I went to fabmo.org and couldn't find anything to match fabric. Help

There is a big selection this month too.

I couldn't find fabmo.org on bing. Do you have an address? I am Mother to 9 cats in Alabama. Does every state have a fabmo?

BarbieQ 01-09-2010 05:18 PM

Where are you going to get this fabric? I couldn't find it on thw web.

sandpat 01-09-2010 05:23 PM

Sounds like you had fun anyway Rachael...looking forward to seeing the pic. I sure am jealous of ya'll getting to take advantage of this!

Silk, cotton, rayon/blends etc. I go for the cottons and a couple tapestry types for carry bags/totes. This is a picture of what I took home today. Also quilters/sewing folks bring in their not needed fabrics and its up for anyones taking. I also picked up a bag with approx. 25 spools of cotton thread all new. I am in a serious piece of heaven. How sad they throw this stuff away. How luck someone picks it up so I can go snag some!

Elisabrat,
where is this mother lode of fabric dispersed? I went online and the info was fuzzy at best. How do you actually get the fabric?
Thanks!

This is run by two people locally who are very environmentally conscious and just great people. They are more than happy to share information on how to start one up in your own area! I am sorry esqmommy didnt find a good selection. I had tried to pm her to get her to stop by my house so I could share.. sigh she didnt call :(

if you go to page one there is the web page listed. of note: what can't be used for quilts can be used for a zillion other things such as :totes, wall hangings, table runners, napkins (linen is big around here for those things).. aprons, stuffed toys, pin cushions.. it runs from thick like couch thick to thin sheers so it all depends on how much is taken before. I guess it was my lucky day when I picked up stuff. I am moving so I wont be able to partake in this any longer either which bums me out.

wraez 01-09-2010 06:47 PM

Geesh, I'm in SoCA and it is just over 6 hr drive to get to the Palo Alto location, boo hoo....just too far away.

Wonder if they have something like this in the LA area where the fabric district is located.

Really a great idea, but wonder if the fabric manufacturers don't want us to know about it. We wouldn't buy it if we can get it for FREE, LOL.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

sylslight 01-09-2010 07:33 PM

you know, i have some of those fabrics in my stash and even have a quilt top made of that first blue fabric with the gold stars!!!!! i can't believe that!!!! everyone's asleep now so i cant go dig it out and get a pic but maybe i will remember tomorrow!!! crazy!

earthwalker 01-09-2010 07:44 PM

What a brilliant concept...don't think we have anything like that here, but I'll do some research. I am in awe of your haul....Thanks for sharing the pics and info.

were you in Mountainview? I know of a store with that name there.

I checked on Recreate in Roseville and it appears to be a non-profit organization that offers assorted art projects (tutoring-like) and is looking for donations and volunteers.

Sugarpumpkin 01-10-2010 10:14 AM

ESQ, I am totally game to go with you in February! I'm looking forward to it! I will start saving my money now (for the quilt store LOL)

rainbowquilt 01-10-2010 12:30 PM

is this kind of recycle to be purchased? unfortunately, i havent found any place like this in the Indiana area. Does anyone know where one might be?

postal packin' mama 01-11-2010 02:30 AM

There was an article last week in the Everett WA 'Herald' newspaper about men inmates in the Monroe WA prison who are using donated fabrics to make quilts for charity! They've donated several hundred since the program's inception in 2008. The photo showed an inmates's two big beefy arms, covered in tatoos, with part of a quilt top he's been working on & comments about how therapeutic it's proven to be. Of course WE already knew that...

Quilt4u 01-11-2010 02:58 AM

Wow!! Wish we had one here.

Ms Grace 01-11-2010 05:38 AM

WOW!
That's a good haul!!
Enjoy! :-D

Esqmommy 01-11-2010 06:47 AM

I shouldn't leave anyone with the impression that I came home empty...I walked out with a huge bag, stuffed to the brim!!!!!!!!! I'll try to get photos in this week!

Yes, it was Eddies in Sunnyvale on Mathilda Ave (close to Mountain View). Huge store and wonderful selection of all kinds of quilting fabrics and notions, and machines too!

And yes Sugar, we'll be good to go in Feb!

montanaquilter 01-11-2010 07:42 AM
