Today I went to the free fabric pick up from fabmo.org (you need to check out what they do). Its all fabric headed for landfill from designer showrooms. Each month they pick up 2,500 tons of fabric on average. Some 6" x 6" some as big as 3 yrds. Some light weight cotton, some heavy tapestry types. Silk, cotton, rayon/blends etc. I go for the cottons and a couple tapestry types for carry bags/totes. This is a picture of what I took home today. Also quilters/sewing folks bring in their not needed fabrics and its up for anyones taking. I also picked up a bag with approx. 25 spools of cotton thread all new. I am in a serious piece of heaven. How sad they throw this stuff away. How luck someone picks it up so I can go snag some!

Wow! That's a lot of FREE fabric for one day's haul! Thanks for rescuing it from the landfill. I always wondered what they do with the samples. Now we know!

MamaBear61 01-07-2010 03:31 PM

Wow, lucky you I see many new projects in your future.

Elisabrat 01-07-2010 03:55 PM

go to fabmo.org there is a link there to get an appointment, this way there are not too many people there at once, they have stacks and stacks and continue to replenish as the piles get low so no time is a bad time (maybe except say the last hour of the last day is picked over).. if you go at 9 a.m. you will have as good a selection as at 2 p.m. They pull fromthe back so your SAFE! There is a big selection this month too.

paintedquilt 01-07-2010 03:59 PM

Wow, you are one lucky duck

lavandula girl 01-07-2010 04:20 PM

We should get a group from here to meet up at one of these events... or at least at close timeslots, and then go have lunch and admire each other's fabric bounty!

Sugarpumpkin 01-07-2010 04:26 PM

I love that idea! I think I will aim for the february one. Money is a little tight at the moment.

OMGosh! I had no idea all that would land in the dump.

What a waste for the areas that do not have this opportunity.

You really made out. Hope you are able to make use of it all.

sewaholic 01-07-2010 11:38 PM

What a waste. I would hire a truck. Can't believe they just dump it. Why not give it to charities to make stuff with.

Bevanger 01-08-2010 05:34 AM

wow! what an awesome load. :-D

Piedmont Quilter 01-08-2010 05:50 AM

Wow! I wish they had something like that here!!

Elisabrat 01-08-2010 05:53 AM

I think this is why they go retrieve it. Each week they make a trip to SF to the showrooms and pick up boxs/bags of this. Last load they picked up 1200 lbs worth. They put so much time and effort into gathering this. Volunteers come sort it, fold and display it in piles by size and then its free to the public to come and collect. Its boggling. And so very sad. We are allowed to take as much as we like just not sell it in the form we receive it in. Once we make something we can sell it. They even get wall paper samples (great for card making), huge boxs of tassels on occasion (those curtain ties?). Yesterday the tile was calling to me but I dont do tile work so I held back. Could be a fun art to learn however. I have been going for two years now. I love the companionship of other people who create. Amazing the ideas they throw around. If you can go to the website www.fabmo.org and check out what has been made by the gatherers of throw away fabric. Such creative ideas.

BelindaD 01-08-2010 05:58 AM

I wonder how we can get something started like that in our area? How would we go about doing it? who would we contact?

I live a couple hours away, so I'm not a good ride share candidate. However, as soon as I can settle some other scheduling things, I'm going to try to get a February slot. Hopefully, I'll see you guys there!

thismomquilts 01-08-2010 06:17 AM

I don't suppose there's anything someone can do to benefit from this if they do not live in the area?

My thoughts exactly!!

But what a great thing for you to be able to take advantage of!! (Did you need a pick up truck to haul it all home????   )

sandpat 01-08-2010 06:33 AM

Oh gosh....If I got to go all the fabric would be wet from me drooling all over all of it! Ya'll are really lucky! Thats a great haul you got!

BelindaD 01-08-2010 07:08 AM

wish there was a number or a website to get them to other areas. I would like to have it here in Mississippi.

craftiladi 01-08-2010 07:17 AM

I triple agree..what a AWESOME haul!!! I went to the web site but didn't see anything on any other areas or getting one started. I am in Ut but only 2.5 hrs away from las vegas I would think LV would be a big enough city to generate some interest.

Sugarpumpkin 01-08-2010 08:53 AM

ESQ, I live in Pittsburg! When is your February appt? I would love to go with you!

dajefu 01-08-2010 09:05 AM

What a BEAUTIFUL thing to have! I live in KS and have never heard of anything like it here. I would love to find something like that! I am fairly new to quilting and have the bug very badly! My mother visits "thrift" stores and yard/garage sales and always thinks of me when she sees any material and picks it up for me. Love this board too by the way!

pocoellie 01-08-2010 09:08 AM

What a haul!!! To think that it would all end up in a landfill-there should be a law against that. I wish I was closer(not that I need any more fabric)LOL
