I've been trying to figure out a place in my sewing room - which is really a "sitting" room off the master bedroom - to put up a design wall. I have one wall that is all closets, one with my fabric storage shelves and a window, one with a window and a more storage I use for my books and drawers for notions, and the other is a half wall open to the bedroom. I finally decided I needed a portable design wall that I could use on my closet wall. The picture shows my solution: a no longer used flannel-backed tablecloth and two plastic pant hangers! I think I'll get a square tablecloth as mine is a bit long or even cut it down to size. When I'm done, I can fold the tablecloth and hang it inside the closet with the hangers so I'll know where to find it next time.

Way to go!

Great idea. I may give this a try, as my sewing area does not a wall that will do for a design area.

Isn't it nice to have a design wall? Love mine. :-D
Nice! I'm still yearning for a design wall.
Ingenious!
Thanks for sharing your great idea! |
Very clever!! :D:D:D

I may have to try this idea too! Thanks for the tip!

Great idea and love your pumpkins.

great idea and I love your pumpkins!

I will definitely have to remember that one as I don't think I will have the room for a dedicated design wall.
Sounds like a keeper. Very portable and efficient. Very nice arrangement also.
Good idea! A few hooks up high on any wall and you could put this up anywhere. Think I'll have to try this with hooks above a closet.
Great invention!
That is a great idea, I may have to borrow it. Thank you for sharing.

What a great idea. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! Our guild just had a show last weekend, and used those kinds of hangers to hang all the quilts. I never thought of using them for a design wall. I was thinking of doing the pink insulation foam board, but didn't know what to do with it, when not using it. This solves that problem, plus my sewing room is in the basement with unfinished ceiling. This will work great! Thanks!

I too don't have an empty wall for a designing wall in my sewing room. I put two very small nails above the closet and hung a flannel-backed tablecloth on the nails using buttonholes I put in the tablecloth. Cheap, easy and removable when needed. That old thing about necessity and invention.... :P
Great idea!! I might have to make one of these too! I have no space to have a designated wall. There just isn't a wall that doesn't have a window on it or door or other stuff..this would work great! Thank you for the idea!
great idea, I am also going to get a roll up blind and install above our closet in bedroom and have my wood guy to make a shelf at the top to cover up the blind when it is pulled up and out of the way (use the adhesive stuff to put the flannel or batting on the roll up blind)
I found a tutorial online for this |

Love the idea. I don't have space for a design but I do have closet doors. Hanging it up with hangers is great. I gave my son a quilt and he liked it so much he decided to hang it up on the wall but used hangers to do it. I burst out laughing when I saw it but he said "hey, it works". I guess it does.
Oh boy!! Now I know how I am spending my afternoon. I have the flannel and I have those hangers. Space? I'll work on that.
Great idea.

Good thinking.

This is what I use all the time, even have more than one hanging at a time, if needed. I like it cause I can take them down & put it all away when I don't need it too. Those cheapo flannel back summer plastic tablecloths work great & different sizes make it nice too! I don't have a wall space big enough for a permanent design wall, so this works great for me... Really helps put your project on it too, then standing back a ways & checking it all out. Sometimes, I leave my blocks on there awhile, helps me decide how I want them & what I want to do with them...
PERFECT, you just gave me a wonderful idea for creating my own design wall!
Great idea! Now why didn't I think of this.
Very clever!
