While cleaning I found two old quilts my gg-grandma made in the 1940s. The first quilt is a bit stained and the 2nd one is in need of repair.

sueisallaboutquilts 06-09-2010 07:41 AM

What a great find!!! Both lovely, the first is AWESOME!!!!!!!!
So happy for you!! :D

dkabasketlady 06-09-2010 07:44 AM

Wow! What treasures to have!! Just think someone put these heirloom quilts in an attic where no one was able to see the magnificent workmanship. The colors are still vibrant.

CAROLJ 06-09-2010 07:55 AM

That's nice. You probably can get the stains out.

If you can't repair the 2nd one, can it be cut down and framed like a piece of art? It's lovely quilt and it would be a shame to not show it off.

nwm50 06-09-2010 07:57 AM

aren't they adorable! Hope you can clean them up & use them.

Treasures. Lucky you.

armywife 06-09-2010 12:30 PM

It's only a guess of when she made them. Country folks just didn't date quilts or at least my country folks didn't. She died in 1949 and she was ill several years prior. My aunt left home in 1941, so the quilt could have been made in the 20s or early 30s.

Stitchnripper 06-09-2010 12:48 PM

they are just wonderful. Imagine if they could tell stories!

rootyr 06-09-2010 01:55 PM

ejpkam 06-09-2010 02:16 PM

what a find!

armywife 06-09-2010 03:05 PM

Yes, I'm thrilled to have found them. This is the second time that I was cleaning and found a quilt made by gg-grandma. And the quilts are made with REAL cotton picked from the fields

This is the first quilt I found about 2 years ago. My i-friend Alexis was kind enough to redraw it for me in EQ. It's on my to-do list to make one day.

CAROLJ 06-09-2010 04:10 PM

I love the cheddar cheese colored blocks, that one is fantastic.

Didn't you feel like you had stepped back in time? I would just want to fondle them and think about her life and her making them. I would still be in the attic probably.
Thank you for letting me enjoy the photos of them.
Regards, Dorothy

Great quilts! How would you repair that one? I have one of my Moms from a long time ago that is in need of repair but I don't know how to go about it.

JEM65 06-09-2010 04:37 PM

Wow! How wonderful that your found them and can appreciate all the time, effort & love that went into these quilts!

armywife 06-09-2010 05:12 PM

sewjean

the 2nd quilt doesn't need repair. I did google quilt repair and found a company in Berkley, CA

watson's mom 06-09-2010 05:18 PM

I would love to have some of my GG's quilts, they were beautiful. Unfortunately no-one in my family thought they were worth keeping and I was too young to know the difference. Good for you on your newfound treasures. They are works of art.

pab58 06-09-2010 06:04 PM
