My avatar became a UFO. I had made multiples of it as Christmas gifts for family that feed hummingbirds. I never finished mine [typical right?] I thought it was from 2011 but in researching the old pictures, I found it to be from 2006!. It is an original pattern and original quilting designs. I used the backs of some fabrics on this one to make the background blend in.

Excellent! A friend used to say you pay for both sides of the fabric, you should use whichever one suits the purpose.

Love your hummer. You sure did a lot of small squares are those 1" squares? I have seen so many quilts with tiny squares but I don't think I could ever work with tiny squares like that I would definitely be a "basket case" before I finished. lol I don't know how you folks can work with such small pieces. Reminds me of the postage stamp quilts.

#1piecemaker 02-05-2016 06:39 AM

Nice work! I love humming birds!

Bren 02-05-2016 06:45 AM

That is just beautiful. I admire you for being able to design your pattern, and LOVE the hummingbirds quilted in the border.

MargeD 02-05-2016 09:17 AM

It's a beautiful quilt, great quilt design and I love the hummingbirds quilted into the border. As for using the backs of fabrics, I remember one visiting quilter to our Quilt Guild saying that we buy both sides of the fabric. I used the back side of a print for a border, when I discovered that while sewing the border on I liked the back side better, so I used it. Thanks for sharing your original pattern. Nice work.

Billy'swife 02-05-2016 11:39 AM

I never knew it wasn't completed! It's beautiful!

QuiltnNan 02-05-2016 01:16 PM

Gerbie, the squares are cut at 2" and finish at 1.5". I don't think I was brave enough back then to cut them smaller. I have an ongoing Bonnie Hunter leaders and enders project right now with 1"cut squares to finish at .5" . It will be a while before anything gets big enough to use in a pattern :)
