My crazy cat quilt idea...in progress.
2 Attachment(s)
Here is what I have challenged myself to do. Years ago, a friend gave me a coffee cup with cat picture on both sides. When I got into quilting, I thought it would be neat to make a quilt with some kind of pattern like this on each side. So, now that I have a granddaughter who really loves cats, graduating from high school in May, I decided that would be the quilt I would make for her.
It is going to be a challenge as there is no pattern so I am just winging it. I am planning on making two cats in the window instead of a cat and a doll as she never was much into dolls. I bought feather fabric thinking it would look like a mottled cat but it was just too 'feathery'. So will remove it and look for something else. This will be an 'experiment as I go' kind of thing. :-) I will add pictures of my progress so far and beg for your encouragement along my journey. I plan to have it quilted by a friend who has a LA in a random squiggle as picture will be different on both sides. I am not an artist so am hoping my version of a cat comes out looking halfway decent. This is why I needed fabric that fairly closely resembles cat fur. |

Here are more pics of progress so far. Feather fabric is going off tomorrow and I will try something else.

This will be fun to watch as you progress. Much luck with it. Will the two kitties be parent and offspring, therefore, one big one and one small one, or will they be siblings, so could possibly be the same size? Decisions, decisions......

*** I like the fabric. *** I just made a cat quilt from flannel. |
I'm looking forward to following you on your journey. I'm a cat lover too:)
Looking good, like the fabric you used for the cat.
Very cool idea, can't wait to see the finished project!
This is going to be really cute. Did you have any luck finding a fabric for your cats? I have seen some fabric that is actually tree bark that could be used.
i kind of like the feather fabric. And I love what you've done so far. If you are really set on changing the cat fur, try looking at some mottled fabric or some landscaping fabric. I found some sheaves of grain that looked exactly like our Ginger cat--it's put away for a someday Mr. Whiskers pattern.
This is going to be awesome. Keep us posted! |
I kind a like that feather fabric. Looks like a calico cat. This is going to be a cute quilt.
The title of your post is Crazy Cat Quilt. Why not get some fancy fabrics and make up a crazy piece big enough to cut your cat from. Do some fancy stitching on it and have a real Crazy Cat.
What fun! I reminds me of a Mickey Mouse t shirt I had with face on front, back on back. That will be really cute when you're done. She'll love it.
Coming along nicely.
You are so creative and talented. Continue to show us the progress! Looking great!

I saw this in a show in Massachusetts, and found it fascinating! Several different fabrics and it turns out looking like a cat. I love the color she chose for the quilting also.
I like the cat fabric also, and I agree looks like a calico. Can't wait to see more!!
I love the effect from the 'feathers' fabric -- it adds another dimension to the top. You could make the other cat a different color, maybe laying down and looking outside.
Oh, I love the kitty fabric!!! this is going well!!
I think the feather fabric does look calico but I would use less of it. As it appears your are appliqueing, why not try just using splotches of the feather fabric interspersed with white. Like the cat in your coffee mug.
Years ago, Debbie Mum had a great cat pattern called "Bird watcher" or Bird watching it was a very cute pieced pattern combined with a bit of fusible applieque of a cat sitting in a windowsill looking out at a birdhouse. It used to be offered free on her website but they must have took it down because I can't find it any more. |
Looking good so far!
I like the feather fabric too. Instead of using it all over, did you ever think about just using it as patches? Can't wait to see the final quilt!
Very cute idea. Good luck on your journey. We will be with you all the way cheering you on. BrendaK

I love you FUR fabric. Keep us up to date with your progress.

A wonderful QB member had some fabric that will work perfectly, I think so she and I are talking. In the meantime, I can work on other parts of the picture. More pictures by end of week if I can get something accomplished. :-)

Love your idea. Saw a toy soldier one at Jacksonvilee quilt Fest 2012.
love your quote.. Figured out the one with the most fabric is one of the last fabricholics and all the fabric has been given to themfrom those passed. got 14 plastic bins of fabric yesterday....so happy I have quilters to give it to and starting a beginners class |
That is going to be darling.
It's going to be adorable, especially with the pink curtains, that will be a nice effect. I like the feathery fabric, really looks like a calico cat. The only problem I see is his ears in contrast with the corn field.
It is going to be beautiful. I like the step by step pictures. This is about how I work, when I am designing a quilt. Keep it going. Can't wait to see it finished.
Love your idea, can't wait to see it done!
