Wow what a big quilt !!! That would scare me to death to try and hand quilt such a large one. Can't wait to see it when it is finished . Great Quilting !!! :-D

lizpatterson1 12-05-2010 09:02 PM

Wow, it's beautiful.

Janet Orfini 12-05-2010 09:51 PM

Do you buy the fabric with the blue outline on it?

This queen-sized whole cloth quilt is what I am currently working on with my hand-quilting. The backing is black and white floral...almost a toile.

Once washed, the blue lines will disappear and all you will see are the stitching lines.

Going to be fantastic.

Thank you so much for sharing this picture. This is going to be such a beautiful quilt.

It would be fantastic if you share photos of your progress, and of course the finished product.

I'm a hand quilter. Doing a whole cloth is on my "to-do" list.

trisha 12-05-2010 10:18 PM

Brilliant!!!

Vanuatu Jill 12-05-2010 10:28 PM

Stunning! Have you done one before? I have been wanting to try a whole cloth quilt, but just never got around to it. I know you can order them on-line. Yours just gives me the push to finally look into getting one. I love to hand-quilt too. Do you supose they come already "sandwiched"? LOL. Just another "must do" project on my list--lets see, must be about project #350! Time to re-prioritize my list so I might have a fighting chance of finishing -say- 10% of the list in this life-time!

ccearley 12-05-2010 10:34 PM

Quite a project you have taken on! It will be gorgeous!!

deltadawn 12-05-2010 11:25 PM

Fabulous.

Beautiful feathers. I love quilted feathers.

mame13 12-06-2010 04:33 AM

Just beautiful, so elegant looking. It took aver 3 years for me to finish mine but it was well worth it.

TeresaT 12-06-2010 05:45 AM

How beautiful! Can't wait to see it finished.

meme peggy 12-06-2010 05:48 AM

I envy you, I have often thought of doing a whole cloth quilt...aprox how long will it take for you to finish one? Just incase I think I have that much life left. memepeggy

meme peggy 12-06-2010 05:54 AM

I am curious about the hand quilting on the whole cloth...I am concerned when I start I would not do it correctly and not realize it until I am 1/2 way finished...do you just start at the top and work right to left? I am thinking about doing one, have been for couple of years? Memepeggy

cowpie2 12-06-2010 06:00 AM

Very nice work. You have beautiful stitches. Be sure to post the finished quilt.

shopaholic97 12-06-2010 06:14 AM

I so admire people who hand quilt. That is beautiful

mimee4 12-06-2010 06:31 AM

Can't imagine beginning a whole cloth quilt. So beautiful.

homecaregiver 12-06-2010 07:12 AM

I am a hand quilter also and I just love this design. Can you tell me where you purchased it. I would love to do a whole cloth quilt. I find that hand quilting relaxes my brain and gives me much pleasure. I have handquilted all my quilts except for s few newer ones. Your work is fantastic, keep up the good work and please post new pictures of this beauty.

Do you think a whole cloth of that size would turn out nice if well basted and done with a hoop? I'd love to try one, but don't have the space for a nice frame like yours.

Yes, the fabric is preprinted. Included in the package was also the cut binding. You can buy the complete kits that include the backing fabric, too. However, the backing they put in there is plain white. I wanted something different, so I used a white with black floral design.

This is my first whole cloth quilt. It's been on my "to do" list for a while now.

The ones I had seen were expensive...usually $80-100. I found this one in a LQS on a trip we took...it was only $56...so I grabbed it up!

Since I use a 3-roll quilting frame...it doesn't need "sandwiching"...you just load the layers onto the quilting frame...which is a "plus"...since I hate to sandwich, too! :)

I'm figuring this will take me 9-12 months...but we'll see. Whenever I start a new quilt, I mark the date down so I know exactly how long it takes me. :)

If you are using a hoop, you start in the middle and work your way out.

If you are using a frame, you start at one end and work your way towards the other end...rolling the quilted part up as you go.

With my 3-roll frame, when I roll it to the next area to be quilted, I still start in the middle of that new area and work out to the side...go back to the middle and work out towards the other side. Some people just work right to left or left to right all the way across the quilt...it's just a personal preference when using a frame.

I do not remember the store where I purchased this quilt top...I just remember that it was a town a few miles south of Valdosta, GA, when we were visiting DS & DDIL last May.

If you google "Penn Prints Queen Anne Star preprinted whole cloth quilt top" you should be able to find it for sale online.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely! I have done many queen -sized quilts on the hoop I had before I got the frame! Lots of basting is the key! I always pin-basted.

GO FOR IT!!! :)

Wow! I'd love to do that one day. I love hand quilting. This one is absolutely gorgeous. Did you mark it yourself, or buy it already marked?

misseva 12-06-2010 10:28 AM

so - it looks as if your cloth was printed with a 2" grid and you're quilting it 1" apart? correct me if i'm wrong - it looks like you're quilting between blue lines too. in my wildest dreams i could never do that. i'm soooo impressed. and you're talking about finishing it in MONTHS???? i'm like another poster - if i did one like this it would be in 10 year increments.

mayday 12-06-2010 10:45 AM

this is DIVINE, did you mark the fabric yourself or buy as it is?

gramquilter2 12-06-2010 11:37 AM

WOW, that is beautiful.

DonnaB 12-06-2010 12:07 PM

ccb2200 12-06-2010 12:49 PM

Beautiful.

Dixieldy 12-06-2010 01:32 PM

Very Gorgeous!!! Wish I could hand quilt. Love the whole cloth quilts myself. Hope to see more pics of this awesome quilt in the future :)

ajohn52 12-06-2010 01:49 PM

Did it come already marked? If you did the marking, you did a great job!! I'd never attempt to do hand quilting...like my "electric needle" method.

Carol B 12-06-2010 02:14 PM

Hi, Can I ask a stupid question? Do you buy the quilt with the blue pattern already on it and then hand stich or do you organise the pattern yourself? I am from Australlia (Adelaide) and I have never seen this sort of thing here!
