Beautiful. This quilt has a lot of movement. Very nice.

Fiber Artist 03-04-2010 10:22 AM

Nice points and color how are you going to quilt it?

Mundy Woodbeck 03-04-2010 04:35 PM

I saw the pattern in my friend's book called "Weekend Scrap Quilting". That pattern though was for a 14" appliqued block. You took a 14 1/2" square of white material, cut out the 8 star points, and used spray adhesive to glue them to the material and then zig zagged around them. I made my own pattern for a 9" 8 Point Star and 9" Square-in-a-Square block to use instead. Thank you for your interest.

Thank you Kim! As for your question, I have no idea! I had been quilting for about 9 months when I decided to try to make an 8 Point star that I'd seen on eBay. Again, I had no pattern. (I have a bad habit of not using patterns.) My Mom told me to use them at least until I learned what I was doing, but I told her that I can't find patterns for the quilts that I see in my head.

Anyways, I just made one like I saw. I made it a 6" to see if I could even do it. Here's a picture of my VERY first attempt. I was totally amazed that it turned out so well. And, every since then, most come out looking pretty good. Some are a little off, but I still think they are beautiful.

When I'm making 8 Point Stars or Carpenter's Stars or anything where the center has to line up, I just put a pin in the
"joining" point, (for lack of a better word), or each block. Keep the pin straight with one hand and pin about 1/8" from it to keep the points together and then sew. Do Not remove the pin until you have passed the "joining" point. Remove pin and finish sewing. That's all I can tell you. Oh yeah, and try to make sure that you keep a straight 1/4" seam so that the two "joining" points are the same distance from the edge of the fabric.

Here's a picture of my first 8 Point Star, believe it or not. (I swear it really is though.) Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Well, I'm still making this right now but I have it figured out to be approximately 91" x 109". I have all my 50-- 8 Point stars made and 25 of my 49 Square blocks made.

cmapco837 03-04-2010 06:09 PM

So it will take 99 square blocks?

I don't have a quilting machine and it's really hard to try to quilt it on my regular machine and kitchen table in my sewing room. (Even with the ironing board there as a table extension.) :-P
I will probably either put the top on eBay to sell it or I will hand tie it like so many other ones I've done.

It's going to be so pretty but we don't use quilts around here. We are both to hot at night for that. I either sell them, give them away, or stick them in trash bags and store them in the closets. Sad, huh???

Yes. I'm making this one 9 x 11 blocks. With a 5" border it would be 91" x 109". (6"=93" x 111") They are 9" blocks.
I like 6" borders best I think, like the ones on My Latest Projects, Jacob's Ladder's. (2", 1", & 3")

quiltykim 03-04-2010 07:06 PM

Oh thank you for the tips! I'm inspired :) You really do beautiful work!

zz-pd 03-04-2010 10:09 PM

That is gone to be gorgeous when its done. Penny

zz-pd 03-04-2010 10:25 PM

danmar 03-04-2010 11:02 PM

I didn't even quilt back in Jan. of 08. I just never set the date on my camera.

Annz 03-05-2010 12:04 AM

It is a Carpenter's Star block. I posted the pattern since so many people were interested. Here's a link to it. Let me know if you have a question.

Hi Marilyn, these are beautful, and you're a natural with those points - some of my first ones were howlers! (sometimes they still are!) I love the blue and white especially! And I just so 'got' it when you said you can't find patterns for the quilts you 'see' in your head! Great work! I'm going to bookmark this, I love stars and have been ditzing around trying to come up with a pattern for a line of fabric I've fallen in love with - you've given me some ideas... I won't copy exactly though - hope that's OK!

You want me to send you the link to the pattern I used? Then you just put in your own colors.

Oops! I was thinking we were talking about the Jacob's Ladder instead of the Field of Diamonds. I made that pattern so there's no link but still let me know if you want my pattern.

cmapco837 03-05-2010 07:49 AM

What does the Field of Diamonds look like

You are really good about using designs for scraps. I can see using some scraps for this one also

cmapco837 03-05-2010 08:15 AM

Do you have the pattern

Thank you! I love all colors of fabrics so I like quilts with lots of color in them. I made one out of scraps and here's the picture of it. This is a great and easy pattern.

cmapco837 03-05-2010 08:31 AM

I see the 8 point star but what about the other piece? Or am i just missing something simple

elfvinnd 03-05-2010 08:38 AM

I really like how you did it in two colors. I have been wanting to make a brown/pink quilt and this would be a great pattern for that. Thanks for sharing.

k3n 03-05-2010 08:47 AM

Yes, it was the Field of Diamonds one. I've got EQ so I THINK I can draft it. If you really don't mind a 'copy cat'! LOL The fabrics I'm thinking of using are red and creams.

Yes, both the original like applique one (14" finished) or mine that is not appliqued (9" finished). See the link here for the differences between the two.

This quilt is made up of 2 blocks, the 8 Point Star and a Square-in-a-Square block. Here are pictures of them so you can how the diamonds come about. Thank you for all your interest.

Thanks for posting that Marilyn, that makes it really clear! I think this is definitely the pattern for my red and creams - just have to draft it up, see how much I'll need then order fabric! Yeaaayyyy!!!

cmapco837 03-05-2010 10:58 AM
