Why not try it with navy blue instead of black. It won't make the colors "pop" as much, but keep it's cheeriness. Just tamed down a bit...but hey, what does this 30 year old's opinion count for?!!! When I was 16, no one buy my own counted :) It's fabulous that she's quilting at such a young age.

Wouldn't change a thang!!!! Tell her "Good Job" Welcome to the Club.

I like the way she has made it but I really like this version better!! I really like the black sashing!

bobolee 08-03-2010 07:41 AM

I like it just the way it is! Maybe some light sashing instead of dark sashing?

Congratulations. What an awesome first quilt. I think she has qualified herself for her own user id on the Quiltingboard. What do you think? She is very gifted and a designer as well. Moonpi's example of your daughters idea of using the black shows what a good idea it is. It is splendid the way it is now and it will be splendid if she adds the black. Her work is excellent. She and you can be very proud of her work and the quilt.

Mariposa 08-03-2010 08:42 AM

Beautiful quilt as it is!! The pinwheels dance across the top. How about a block border to make it "pop', then a colorful binding? Please share photos when it is finished. Kudos to her for sewing at 16! Looks like she is on to something ( lifelong hobby!) :)

klgreene 08-03-2010 09:04 AM

I like it with and without the black. It makes it two different quilts. The one thing I've learned in quilting like decorating....If it's for me, I have to love it, and not worry about anyone else. She's done a fabulous job at picking out colors, so I'd keep it the way it first looked in her head. Great job!

catrancher 08-03-2010 09:30 AM

I think black would be very pretty. If she wants to tone it down, white might be nice too. I think it's pretty as is.

I think a black border will make the colors stand out even more but it would break it up a bit.

Try black sashing on a few of them and she can see how she likes it.

Much more advanced than the first quilt I made about that same age!

I agree. K

I love it just the way it is and after all she is a teenager and they usually love bright colors.
I bet her friends will love it as well.

Tweety2911 08-03-2010 04:33 PM

Black sashing and borders look great!

CraftsByRobin 08-03-2010 04:48 PM

I love it as it is ... but that's just my opinion!

Aunt Retta 08-03-2010 04:58 PM

What a great thing for a sixteen year old! It is fine as is or depending on what she wants black for pop. Some light color to make it more calm.

Annz 08-03-2010 05:29 PM

I like it the way it is. I think blask adhing would take away from it's beauty and/or make the blocks look split up. Nah it is nice the way it is. A nice border will help.

BarbZ 08-03-2010 05:54 PM

If she sashes it in black will she take the whole thing apart? I really is pretty just the way it is. Maybe pull on e of the colors in it to sash it. It is so pretty and bright. Real nice job.

grammyp 08-03-2010 05:58 PM

I am a fan of black sashing. I think a small sash would help define the blocks.

Lori L 08-03-2010 06:02 PM

The quilt I'm making for my 19yr old daughter is all bright batiks with the borders/centers being black. She absolutely is crazy about how the black looks with all the bright colors. It must be a teenager thing cuz it's making me dizzy. LOL

watson's mom 08-03-2010 06:07 PM

Your daughter's quilt is beautiful just the way it is. Black border would finish it nicely. IMHO. Looking forward to seeing more of her creations. Welcome her to the 'Board for me please.

Dee 08-03-2010 06:47 PM

I love it the way it is. Very cool.

Friendly Quilter 08-03-2010 06:50 PM

The black would really set it off but make it a narrow shashing cut 1"- finshed 1/2".

She did good job, the colors or so bright. My style of quilt.

That's what I do except I lay would open the black fabric out and lay the blocks on it like you would if it was sewed together (spacing each like you think it show be). If you don't like it then try another color until you find one that works for you.

Her blocks are great so I'm sure she will find just the right color to make her happy with it.

Patched 08-04-2010 01:30 AM

Tell your daughter she did an awesome job, I love her quilt, but I like bright colors. To finish I would add a black 1" or 1.5" border and then a 3 or 4" border of the green fabric used in the middle.

zz-pd 08-04-2010 07:46 AM

I love it, A black boarder would make the colors pop out more. she did a great job. God bless.

vdouglass 08-04-2010 07:56 AM

I have taken a quilt apart and redid it with black sashing and it came out spectacular. It is beautiful the way it is, but if she is not satisfied then I would do the black sashing. Something about the black that will make it really pop. Good luck.

beautiful, love the bright coloors

AnnaK 08-04-2010 08:40 PM

Yeah, I agree. I think the black really gives it dramatic effect. Dont' know how you did that Moonpi but it's a great illustration. Let us know what your dtr decides.

tooMuchFabric 08-04-2010 08:49 PM

She should be very proud of this quilt.

1. - She made a quilt.
2. - She chose her colors.
3. - She learned something about quilting, about colors, and about herself in this process.

A sound success all around, I say.

lass 08-05-2010 03:26 PM

There seems to be a center area that could be "sashed in bright pink with the other blocks then sashed in the same pink individually.

lilpoohbearie 08-05-2010 08:50 PM

After looking at all of the wonderful advice my daughter tore the quilt apart and blocked the green center. It looks so much better. It really toned down the glare so to say and she loves it!!! Thank you all again for your words of wisdom to her!

SueDor 08-06-2010 07:40 AM

I think she did a great job for her first quilt. The next quilt she makes can have the black sashing.

soleegirl 08-06-2010 08:32 AM

perfect just the way it is. love the colors and the balance . Great job !

sewmuchmore 08-06-2010 08:43 AM

Hooray !! I think it is a bright and happy quilt. I love it as it is.

M.I.Late 08-06-2010 08:49 AM

I love that you get different ideas here. Add black, leave it, add grey, border the center only, add pink. Lots of ideas.
With it on a design wall like you have it, it's a great way for your quilt to talk to you. You knew it wasn't turning out to be your vision, so it was already talking to you.

I'm glad you came to this board for input. Sometimes ideas come out of here like a machine. Just try as many as you can and the one that is right for this quilt (in your eyes) will reveal itself.

You did a great job! The other kids will love it! Just remember you can't keep them all in quilts but you can make them all quilters. (Quilting with friends is great.)

auntiehenno 08-06-2010 11:15 AM

Tell your daughter you are not brain dead yet!!!!

Mousie 08-06-2010 11:26 AM

there is no right or wrong...only what the quilter likes.
They both look good :XD:
