This is my daughters very first ever made quilt. It is bright she is not happy with how it has turned out. She thinks it might get tamed down if she puts a black sashing around each pinwheel block. What is your advice to her? She is 16 and is very open to your opinion since my opinion is not valid he he teenagers!!!

I love it just the way it is I wouldn't add a black sash. Go

oatw13 08-01-2010 06:57 PM

I love it just how it is. (But I love bright, happy quilts!)

I think a black border will make the colors stand out even more but it would break it up a bit.

Try black sashing on a few of them and she can see how she likes it.

Much more advanced than the first quilt I made about that same age!

dkabasketlady 08-01-2010 07:01 PM

Black sashing will make the blocks really POP!! So, I'd leave it like it is!!! I think it's gorgeous being so Bright & Vibrant!!!

sewcrafty 08-01-2010 07:01 PM

IMHO black is going to make the colors pop even more. Is she wanting to tone down the colors or separate the design?

If she really wants to tone down the colors a beige/tan or gray would do that.

Perhaps she should ask her peers  Certainly they know best    Gee do they know how to thread a needle? I think the quilt looks great the way it is. So my bet is "she will sash it in black"
Oh my goodness I needed a good laugh!!!

Mary M 08-01-2010 07:17 PM

I think a border with one of tan and one of black would look good.

lilpoohbearie 08-01-2010 07:18 PM

So I told her the same thing :) She is accepting your advice and leaving it alone!!! I am really proud of her for making this it was her first attempt to quilt with out a pattern she just made it up as she went.

lilpoohbearie 08-01-2010 07:19 PM

You are so right!!!!!

Lay a piece of black fabric next to the quilt. Then look at it for a couple of days from different angles.
She did good job, the colors or so bright. My style of quilt.

sueisallaboutquilts 08-01-2010 07:20 PM

I am so impressed! When I was 16 you wouldn't have caught me dead making a quilt!
I like it as it is, I wouldn't change a thing :D

My sixteen year old daughter, Jenni, says it's awesome the way it is!

lalaland 08-01-2010 07:21 PM

Have her put several different border colors up to the sides, try black fist, then maybe a green or a brown. Have her try colors she wouldn't try, sometimes what we don't think we would like surprises us. Every different color she tries will give her a different look and she may find one that she really likes and it may be the black one - ya never know.

I like it with black - reminds me of the old granny square afghans. Here's a preview

Nope, i agree with Jenni, leave it as is!

mzsooz 08-01-2010 07:27 PM

I love it. Just needs a border around it. I would try to work in that black print that is used in the center. Maybe a black border and bind with that print?

That's exactly what I thought! But, whatever she decides, please tell your daughter that she did a wonderful job! I love that quilt!

sharon b 08-01-2010 07:48 PM

No opinions, as she has plenty , but she did a fantastic job  Tell her we are proud of her

Gerbie 08-01-2010 07:52 PM

Has she already sewn all of the blocks together in rows? If she hasn't and wants to see what black will do with it, maybe instead of areoung each block, do vertical or horizontal black sashing and see what she thinks.

0tis 08-01-2010 08:05 PM

I think it looks fabulous. If your daughter thinks she should add black then by all means add black. Just remind her she is the artist and what looks good to her eye is exactly how it should be finished. Bravo....

I love it just like it is! And it's still gorgeous with the black that moonpi showed. Whatever she decides will be beautiful.

Jim's Gem 08-01-2010 08:29 PM

It looks great!!!

Gramof6 08-01-2010 08:30 PM

I think your DD did a fantastic job on this. I love pinwheels so I myself would probably leave it as is. A teen may want to sash it though in black. It is her quilt & she has done a terrific job so far. :D :D :D

lilpoohbearie 08-01-2010 08:31 PM

Thank you for your kind words!

Oh Moonpi, that is amazing and I am gonna switch to black sashing. How did you do that??? Ya that is cool looking!

earthwalker 08-01-2010 09:14 PM

I too love it how it is...however if you wanted to showcase the centre...just sash around the green/masquerade/pink pinwheel combo as one big block, then a black border round the very edge of the top and that would really highlight it. Very impressive work....what is she going to be producing in a few years time....awesome!

Vanuatu Jill 08-01-2010 09:28 PM

Anyway she finishes it will be lovely-I was once told by a very experienced quilter that "There is no such thing as an ugly quilt!" (She didn't see my first AND second quilt!!)

KiwiQuilter 08-01-2010 11:39 PM

The black looks great.

jemma 08-02-2010 03:28 AM

i would love to wrap myself in that rainbow-- a joyfull and beautifully made healing quilt

2manyprojects 08-02-2010 07:48 AM

I like it this way, but a darker border will really make it pop...good job!

azdesertrat 08-02-2010 08:05 AM

maybe black inner border very small maybe 1 inch wide.and if she really wants to break it up a even smaller black around the green center piece

mizmarymac 08-02-2010 10:02 AM

I recently asked the same question on my baby quilt. Someone said to let the pinwheels dance, love that phrase. She did a good job. I love the bright colors without a slash.

Ritzquilts 08-02-2010 10:43 AM

Am a bright person and the quilt looks great, just the way it is now

littlehud 08-02-2010 10:49 AM

I wouldn't change a thing. It looks great. She did a wonderful job.

Jeannie V 08-02-2010 10:53 AM

Your daughter did a wonderful job. And she is only 16 years old-Wow. You are a good influence on her. I think maybe the black sashing would be nice or even the green color that is in the center. Also use the print that is in the center for the binding.

mrs. fitz 08-02-2010 01:11 PM

The quilt is lovely, more so being made by someone her age. If it were mine I'd add a black border on the outer edges (if that's black in the center print) or maybe match the blue but I'd leave the blocks as is. Good job!

anicra 08-03-2010 03:12 AM

Looks perfect just the way it is. Nice job!
