My daughter is starting college this year.... I am making her a college quilt. She loves dogs....So she picked 4 blocks from the book "Best in Show" by Carol Armstrong. Three of the dogs represent out own dogs (Lab, Jack Russell, and our Honey our German Sheperd Mix) . The block in the upper right hand corner I did on my own. She has very unusual ears!  The blocks are all done and I have set them into my EQ6. I need some help on the inner boarder…. Not sure what color to use.. Dark brown, lighter green, green/brown mix, dark blue… Help! Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

That is going to be one amazing quilt!!!! (love your dog, btw)... my 2 cents is that I'm not a fan of the green border, but I'd have a hard time deciding between the others. They all look good to me!!! PLEASE post it when you get it done, I can't wait to see it!

The brown border looks right. Good job with the design.

Astramorgaine 04-01-2010 07:12 AM

I like the blue border. You've done an amazing job so far!

I agree. I like the blue the best. Love your design!

That ids so cute! And I love your Honey! We had a Doberman whose ear did that. Use anything but the green!

Marjpf 04-01-2010 08:26 AM

I like the blue or the dark brown. Seems to make the blocks pop more. Speaking of popping - I almost popped out of the chair when the picture of Honey came up! She's a really cutie - just expecting another quilt picture!

I vote for the blue border too. It brings the focus of the quilt to the center block.

pocoellie 04-01-2010 05:43 PM

I've got to admit to liking the blue for the border. What a unique quilt.

CAROLJ 04-01-2010 06:23 PM

Wow you are so talented!. I'm amazed on how realistic the quilt looks like the photo. I don't like the green either.

littlehud 04-01-2010 06:26 PM

what a great quilt. I love the brown border. She is going to have a wonderful quilt to take to collage.

I like the darker colors...seem to anchor it better.

love all of them! What an awesome quilt that is!

Leota 04-01-2010 07:12 PM

After looking at all the borders, I think the brown border make the dogs pop more...But your daughter has the final say

watson's mom 04-01-2010 07:24 PM

Love those crooked ears. My choice of borders would be the blue or the dark brown. Which one does your daughter like, that's probably the way to go. Love it.

sewnsewer2 04-01-2010 07:35 PM

I like the light green border. I just want to say that this is really a great quilt! You did an awesome job on it, and your dog is so cute with those ears!

quiltwoman 04-02-2010 03:33 AM

Love the quilt and the dog! I, too, like the darker ones, blue or brown.

I think she needs a matching pillowcase too

I agree, either the blue or brown, what a cute quilt, but what I thought was the cutest is your Honey. I almost fell off my high chair here, I thought I was going to see a quilt too. lol. Great job and cute dog.

Your Honey is precious and so cute. The quilt is great and your daughter will hug it in college. She'll be the envy of all the girls in her dorm.

tslowery 04-03-2010 07:40 AM

Great quilt....I like the blue one...

dglvr 04-03-2010 08:01 AM

I love it. Oh my goodness. You are sooo creative. I have that book so I guess I better get mine out now. Did you draw the upper right side picture of your dog or is that a picture of your dog. If you drew that I'll let ya draw a picture of my dobies anytime. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I like the brown border best. Then the blue second best.
Would love to see it again when its completed. I'm jelious.

Beautiful. Blue gets my vote!

bstanbro 04-03-2010 09:08 AM

Love that. What a precious face on your dog.

tooMuchFabric 04-03-2010 10:29 AM

Please Be Sure To Label The Quilt!! Quilts at camp or school tend to grow little legs and wander off. It would be heartbreaking after so much beautiful work to have the quilt disappear.
Maybe even mark the front of it somehow.
Put her name on it or something.

cindygale 04-03-2010 03:10 PM

cute quilt...will be greatly loved... :D

sewcrafty 04-03-2010 04:10 PM

IMHO, I like the green-brown, enough to make a difference, but yet brings in the browns from the puppies. Its a more soothing combo for me.

T-Bones mom 04-03-2010 06:34 PM

What a great quilt for your daughter to take to college. My daughter is in her third year and she would have loved to have taken the family pets with her like that. She is green with envy. Your Honey is absolutely precious. What a gem.

I didn’t draw the dog freehand. First I cropped a picture of Honey’s face…. blew up the picture of her face….. printed it out on a 8 by 11 sheet of paper…. Layered a sheet of velum on top…. Brought it to the light box and traced an outline according to the different shades of color….. I then went into my Photoshop and printed another photo just showing 5 or 6 shades of color (not sure which filter that is). The whole process was lots of fun! Saw something like it on one of the sewing shows (Sewing with Nancy ????) a long time ago.

I’d do your Dobies any time!

What makes this quilt special for me is the Chocolate Lab in the center block. She was with us for 10 and half years….She was my daughters first dog….We were heartbroken when she passed away almost a year ago…..It is comforting for me to know “Chocolate” will be watching over my daughter when she is away.
