Mikali is five, and for Christmas I gave her a FQ and a sewing kit/basket. I actually wanted to make her a doll quilt, too, but ran out of time. Then for her birthday in January, I gave her some charm squares cut out of fabrics from my stash.

She embroidered the heart for the medallion, picked the squares to use and hand sewed the pairs of charm squares together for this quilt. Then she sat in my lap and "helped" me guide the fabric through to sew the rest of the seams (was getting to a point I knew she was losing patience with the sewing and not having a finished project). Yesterday I sandwiched it and ran the yarn ties through. I showed her how to tie a knot, and she tied all the knots except two. Today I bound it and she signed the label.

Action shot!

Nicely Done!

skydiver70 02-25-2011 03:03 PM

What a cutie pie she is! A very pretty first quilt with more to come, I bet. She did a great job. I love to see parents being so patient with their children when they want to learn something.

I wish my niece was as patient with her little boy. He is so smart and eager to learn, but not much encouragement from parents. I wish I could be near him. He is so loving and gets so excited when he does something. Then they scream at him.

I was never able to have children, but I have kept neighbor's children and really enjoyed the smiles on their faces when they got compliments.

I am not so patient as I would like to be, sometimes :( but I think it's good for kids to gain skills and be complimented on them.

She loves her baby. She also embroidered a little bib for it, and a pillow. That baby is spoiled.

Maybe when I'm old and in the nursing home, she'll at least bring me a quilt. :)

I do think that it's better in the end that I helped her make a doll quilt instead of just giving her one that I've made. Makes me feel better about not getting all the Christmas stuff I had planned done, anyway.

Tweety2911 02-25-2011 06:53 PM

she is just a darling and what a nice quilt. Look at you how proud. maybe she could enter it in a fair in your town or city.

CloverPatch 02-25-2011 08:08 PM

Oh your in trouble now! first its a doll quilt, next thing you know, she has her own stash and your best fabric keeps going MIA!

I am teaching my 8 yr old to quilt, I am now having to hide all the "good" fabric. She is breaking through the barriars and no longer content with my scraps.! LOL!

kim_s 02-25-2011 09:56 PM

Oh wow! Just lovely. What a great little treasure of what you made together!

Babs194068 02-26-2011 03:54 AM
