butterflywing 07-25-2010 10:05 AM

not only is the entire quilt, the colors and the setting stunning (i'm stunned), but the hand stitching is unbelievable.

Jean OK 07-25-2010 10:10 AM

I do not think I have ever seen a Quilt so beautiful. It of course comes from the land of nimble fingers, Ireland. I married an Irish Lad so I love all things Irish. Your Quilt is beautiful, and I can tell that it took alot of time and thought. I don't know if anyone else has commented,,,but to look at the design, you have several going on in this quilt. I have counted four all ready.
Just Beautiful, Jean

Thank you Jean, not that I really want to contradict you, 'cos it was made in Ireland, but I am actually UK born and an exile of 10 years.

Several people have commented on my Trip round the World format, but the original is thought to have been like that. Certainly the centre blocks are, and I think the general thinking is that various degrees of fading have made subsequent rows less noticeable.

Some people are absolutely amazing!

MissQuilter 07-25-2010 04:50 PM

how wonderful. You have inspired me to move forward. I have just barely started, slowed by a summer filled with grandchildren and two work trips.... but come August, I am forging ahead! Thanks for showing us your beautiful quilt.

indycatcarol 07-25-2010 06:14 PM

Amazing. A friend of mine just completed hers. She posted a pic of the one block that had 93 pieces. I thought, so what! Then I remembered these are 4 1/2" blocks. YIKES!

Hi Sheree Did you make the quilt in your avatar? It sure is a beauty. I usually like scrappy but this one catches your eye.

rhueluna 07-25-2010 08:29 PM

So, if you quilted each block as you went along, how does it look on the back? Just curious. I am doing mine in 3rds. I wonder if Jane Stickle did hers that way too. Then how did you add the scallops on the edges? I don't recall you saying you did them that way, but another person told me you did. Interesting.

Rina 07-25-2010 11:52 PM

Beautiful Lesley, congratulations on such a big task accomplished!

You can find out how I quilted each block as I went along here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-28063-214.htm
Then I posted a pic of the back here:

Re the scallops, I waited until I had a completed top, all quilted just through the batting, then I added all the strips of scallops that are individual pieces (as per the software), and backed them with batting. Finally I basted on the backing, quilted in the ditch around all the blocks and my pieced triangles, and quilted through all the layers on the scallops, before binding. Not a conventional way, but I had intended originally to quilt in the ditch by machine, as it was going to be all straight lines. In the end, I thought it was worth the extra effort to do all that by hand so that the whole thing was hand quilted. Going round the blocks was the hardest part for me, as it was the most boring. I am intrigued by that, as I kept a log of all of my blocks, and I don't remember any of them having that many pieces. Mind you, my memory isn't what it was, so she could very well be right.

sandpat 07-26-2010 07:11 AM

Oh my...me too...I was thinking...I haven't gotten to that 93 piece block....wonder which one it is??

For anyone that is hand piecing Dear Jane I have a good tip. Take a piece of cardboard about 10" by 12" and cover it with flannel. This will be your mini flannel board to arrange your pieces before sewing. And they don't get mixed up so bad. I cut and place them as I go and there is no confusion. I hope this helps. :)

Neat idea Rhue.

sandpat 07-27-2010 03:32 PM

Rhue..thats a fabulous idea...the pieces to that tri gives me the shudders when I think about hand piecing it...

rhueluna 07-27-2010 03:33 PM

I tried paper piecing and to me its a nightmare. I enjoy hand piecing. And its so fulfilling when I see it completed.

sandpat 07-27-2010 04:00 PM

Yes, you're right...it is fullfilling when its done. I love to hand piece and hand quilt...(my hands don't care for it:roll:) but these pieces are soo tiny that I'm afraid the only way I can accomplish this is to PP. You are soo extremely talented with all your hand work Rhue.----sorry Lesley for highjacking your thread..

SimplyLisa 07-27-2010 04:07 PM
