My dishwaser broke, so I made a dish mat

I've not had a dish drainer in years, so when my dishwaher decided to take a dump on me I was left unprepared. Honey is sure that it can be fixed, and his urgency on this matter is... well... it's not on the top of his list like it is mine. Instead of pushing the issue I made this little cutie from a scraps of batting and leftover fabric from another project. Simple and cute and adds a touch of whimsy to the kitchen.

Very nice. Let's hope he fixes it soon. The last time our plumbing went down it took him overhearing me on the phone to the plumber to get him to get it fixed.

Cute idea...

QuiltnNan 12-07-2012 03:21 AM

nicely done

dilyn 12-07-2012 04:40 AM

very cute and a really nice idea!

nabobw 12-07-2012 05:35 AM

good idea but not as nice as a dishwasher

gramajo 12-07-2012 05:41 AM

Great idea!

cjackaitlin 12-07-2012 05:42 AM

Real cute, but it should be for show. Tell him to get doing or you will call the plumber.LOL.

SheriR 12-07-2012 05:45 AM

Yup great idea and super cute! I have certain things that I won't put in my dishwasher, this would be perfect for my kitchen.

sniktasemaj 12-07-2012 05:57 AM

cute idea and saves a lot of energy

Baloonatic 12-07-2012 07:25 AM

Oh Lea, what a good idea! I've purchased a couple to use for those items that I prefer to not put into the dishwasher, but I'd prefer to make them of course. What did you use for batting? How did you keep the layers together, did you quilt them?

DJ 12-07-2012 07:33 AM

I like it! Might make myself one.

mighty 12-07-2012 08:58 AM

Great idea, really cute!!!

DOTTYMO 12-07-2012 10:44 AM

Did you use water proof material on top or bottom or not at all. When it gets wet what happens?

Love the idea.

feline fanatic 12-07-2012 10:59 AM

very retro. Love the rounded corners. But I would not stand for no dishwasher. Make DH do dish duty, your dw will be fixed in no time flat! :D

Sdwill 12-07-2012 11:15 AM

Super cute! I always give my DH one week to fix something. Otherwise, there will be a repairman paid to fix it or as in the last time my dishwasher went down, I had new one delivered (it was 15 years old, time for a new one).

I used warm and natural, Ive seen others use a towel. Its quilted with 45 degree lines in one direction an inch apart.

Love the idea.

No waterproofing, when wet I wring out the excess and hang it over the stove handle, looks pretty cuter there too! Theres only the two of us so we don't have alot of dishes as long as I keep them done as we use them. So theres not to much water to absorb.

cat2quilt 12-07-2012 12:33 PM

You are very inventive!

Rumbols 12-07-2012 12:39 PM

Very nice. Hope he fixes it soon.

Maggie_Sue 12-07-2012 12:45 PM

What a clever idea I could use one for the items that do not go in the dish washer. Thank you!

NJ Quilter 12-07-2012 02:38 PM

Very cute. I haven't had a dish drainer for years either. Hate clutter on my counters. I end up just using a dishtowel when the need arises. I'm with the others though for letting him hear you call the plumber. Works in our house all the time.

Helen S 12-07-2012 05:00 PM

Great idea! I always keep a folded towel beside the sink anyway for things like knives with wooden handles or things I wash up as I'm cooking that I don't put into the dishwasher. I think this would look much nicer than my towels, though. lol

fred singer 12-07-2012 06:18 PM

nice touch

mrsponcho1 12-07-2012 07:12 PM

I also have things that do not go into the dishwasher. I have been using a towel for 24 years. Maybe I should think about making some of these.

ScrapQuilter 12-08-2012 12:17 PM

Cute idea you came up with....... now when hubby sees this I don't think your getting the dishwasher fixed will get to the top of the list sooner........ LOL

QM 12-08-2012 12:27 PM

Cute! I understand your feelings here. Mne has been out for 2 weeks and it will be Christmas Eve before the guy has the parts and is able to get back to our mountain home.

kathbug 12-09-2012 04:26 AM

That's really cute.i hope you don't have to wait as long as I did for a new dishwasher , just had my replaced after almost 3 years. My married daughters got after their dad to,replace for me!

Blinkokr 12-09-2012 04:29 AM

Just lovely, great job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day
Ellen

didi 12-09-2012 04:31 AM

A great idea!! I just bought one at Bed & Bath for my drainer to sit on, there's just the two of us. I will have to say your is alot prettier than mine...here's another project for me. LOL

dart1 12-09-2012 04:51 AM

I like your dish mat, but what's a dishwasher? LOL

jpmaroni 12-09-2012 04:53 AM

Just like us quilters...when life hands us lemons, we make lemonade!! Or is that when life hands us scraps we make something useful!!!

Babs194068 12-09-2012 06:44 AM

Cute idea...

PS Stitcher 12-09-2012 07:54 AM

That is really cute!!

Cookie64 12-09-2012 07:57 AM

That is really cute, I would tell him either get it fixed or he will have to do the dishes. My HD does the dishes even with a dishwasher. Cookie64

vickig626 12-09-2012 08:13 AM

what a great idea!! I usually wash my pans by hand and lay out towels on the counter. Will definitely make a couple of these.

ppquilter 12-09-2012 08:17 AM

Very cute idea!

Momala24 12-09-2012 08:22 AM

This is absolutely brilliant! I don't even have a dishwasher (kitchen so small one wouldn't fit in), and I live in a very hard water area so I'm always struggling to deep my metal dish drainer looking decent. I am definitely going to copy your idea and make a couple of these. Thank you so much for sharing...I love it when someone comes up with such a great idea that we can all copy!

FWDesigns 12-09-2012 08:26 AM

Wow - what a great idea! I bought one of those plain ivory dishmats but I'm definitely thinking about making a cover for it or just taking it apart and using it for the inside with a pretty outer cover and re-binding the edges. I would have never thought of that if you hadn't shown your pretty mat. Thanks again for sharing and I hope you get your dishwasher up and running soon.
