My Estate Sale HAUL

9 Attachment(s)
I just had to share my estate sale haul :) SQ(single quilter) died without a crafty family member to leave all her goodies to! They were literally giving stuff away. I stopped them from the biggest travesty of selling her artisan quilts for $20 each...I just about cried when I heard they had sold about $4000 worth of quilts for $400... I help them price out what the remaining stuff was worth, so they gave me an excellent deal.

:) Not shown are teh quilt racks, planning board or Quilt Frame. So excited!! lol

Lucky you and lucky them that you were able to help get things priced more correctly.

QuiltnNan 09-10-2012 03:51 PM

it's too bad about the SQ, but you were well-rewarded for your assistance

QuiltMom2 09-10-2012 03:54 PM

Wow!! Some of the books I consider quilting classics!!

Pickles 09-10-2012 04:01 PM

Yeah..I'm going to be having words with the 'lady' who bought the quilts, she knew how much those were worth and didn't say a penny and when she asked if $20 was reasonable she said "I think so"....It's one thing haggle and get something cheap...but to me that was just dishonest...not something I could have done..although I will be taking the embroidery machine off their hands for pennies on the dollar, but I did tell them what it was worth on ebay before we settled on a price!

AUQuilter 09-10-2012 05:30 PM

First of all, let me commend you for having the honesty and integrity to assist the family members by being up front with them on pricing. And then a big WHOOP of excitement for your haul.

Peggy Jeanne 09-10-2012 05:30 PM

You did a wonderful thing, makes me proud to be a quilter!

Kudos to you for helping them out! Honesty and integrity always win out! :)

DogHouseMom 09-10-2012 06:26 PM

Good job ... both with the haul and for helping them out.

The Bachman book alone is worth a fortune ... out of print and currently selling for a few hundred bucks.

pinecone 09-10-2012 06:28 PM

It looks like you are all set for a long winter of quilting and reading.

ScrapQuilter 09-10-2012 06:41 PM

Lori S 09-10-2012 06:48 PM

nunnyJo 09-11-2012 06:52 AM

so sad that she did not have anyone tha was more interested and goo haul for you. use it in good heealth

oma66 09-11-2012 07:37 AM

WOW! I have never seen such a huge haul from one sale before. Blessings to you for helping the estate price items more appropriately. I am sure the person(s) that bought the quilts is saying they got the deal of a life time right now and not thinking about whether it was honest or not. I think that perhaps the family sold to you not just because of your honesty and integrity, but because their loved one's things were going to someone that cared about her passion as much as she did and they wanted YOU to have them. I know that would be how I'd feel.

Quilter 65 09-11-2012 11:08 AM

Good for you being honest. How sad that those treasures were about given away.

Jingle 09-11-2012 11:55 AM

Very nice haul. Always some slug to take advantage of people, I'm so glad you came along and helped them with pricing the quilts. Sounds like you made out like a bandit.

WMUTeach 09-12-2012 04:10 AM

Woof, Woof, you luck dog you! You have a full fall and winter season of quilt supplies and ideas to explore!

calicojoan 09-12-2012 04:20 AM

Wow, someone got a fabulous deal. Sad that they couldn't get more value for the quilts though. I spy many of the same books in my collection!

jeanneb52 09-12-2012 05:38 AM

Congrats on your haul. Looks like you'll be busy this winter.

jbj137 09-12-2012 06:59 AM

Thank you for helping them.
I had a cousin who did the same selling
of his Mom's crochet items.

It's always sad to hear when a talented quilter has passed away and the remaining family has no interest in carrying it on. I have attended several estate sales over the past few months where exactly that has happened and my 'hauls' have been beyond extraordinary.

Roberta 09-12-2012 10:44 AM

I'm so glad you found this sale and saved them from giving the things away. I wonder if it wouldn't make sense for those of us getting on in years to pencil in a price on some things and perhaps make a master list with prices for templates, cutters, tables, machines, etc. If we have family we could give it to one of them for safe keeping and they would know the value of our "junque" as some in my family call it.

If you're not a quilter you just have no idea of the worth of things we have.

nygal 09-12-2012 10:54 AM

It really is true "we can't take it with us".

1screech 09-12-2012 02:58 PM

It looks like you scored big. It sure makes us jubilant when we find great stuff at a good price. I would probably be most excited about the box of squares...just cannot help love scraps.

Quiltshaker 09-12-2012 03:28 PM

So very sad. Her passion just sold for pennies. So glad that you came to the rescue.

RkayD 09-12-2012 05:31 PM

That book..by Barbara Brackman..Encyclopedia of Quilt Patterns. It a treasure for sure. When I bought mine I paid $75 and the next time I looked it was $400. Your lucky.

tatavw01 09-12-2012 05:50 PM

good for you but it makes me sad that non quilters don't know what they have
enjoy

nstitches4u 09-12-2012 06:06 PM

They were lucky you were able to help them with pricing. Non-quilters have no idea of the value of quilts. Glad they reciprocated and gave you a good deal.

Actually, yard sales and estate sales are like their own little world. $20 for a quilt at one of the above is about right--IMO. Of course it is dirt cheap, but the idea behind the two is to get rid of their stuff. If not, they should look into auctions or consignment, or try selling on ebay or someplace where people who are actually in the know will shop. It is what keeps yard salers going--looking for the great haul. I once bought a whole tote of fabric (a big luggage tote..not a 32 quart one), for $20. I don't consider that I stole the fabric, but it was literally pennies a yard.

If I were the buyer, I'd be pretty upset at you for coming to me to tell me I'd cheated the sellers. If I paid what they asked for, I'd consider both of us happy.

quiltingcandy 09-12-2012 10:02 PM

We had an estate sale when my mother passed and I literally went thru the house before the estate people and took out the things family members wanted. They were all welcome to go thru the house to take what they wanted, but felt ghoulish about it, so just told me what they wanted. I saved certain items, I told a several old book stores that my parents frequented they had passed and to come by the house - but never did until the estate people contacted them. There were over 5,000 books - they did not believe me - when they got there they all said how they were surprised by the amount of books, there was enough to open an actual bookstore, but we didn't have time.

When someone dies you have a couple months to liquidate the assets, so you sell what you can at very low prices. Do they buyers get bargains? Yes, do you really have a choice? I don't think so. And I don't want to talk about the art work they spent thousands of dollars and we go little or nothing for it. Time are tough and now people have very little money for extras. So they are not going to spend a lot of money at an estate or yard sale. If you charge too much people just walk away, and so something is better than nothing. If you don't have a dead line - that would be nice. But very few people have a lot of time, so thank you all for shopping the estate sales and please do not feel bad for buying the bargains.

earthwalker 09-12-2012 10:53 PM

Well I'm sure SQ would be pleased her stuff is going to someone who will use it and treasure it. I hope when my time comes my quilting stuff will find a good home too. In my travels, I have encountered dealers who know exactly what an item is worth and will intentionally mislead people into practically giving things away...Well done being honest.....a lot of people do get great bargains at estate sales, which is fair enough...but some people do take liberties.
