Here's my first real attempt at free motion quilting with my longarm. This is the backside. I can tell I have a bazillion more hours of practicing to go!

Murphy 11-03-2010 05:43 AM

Beautiful first time.

feline fanatic 11-03-2010 05:44 AM

Looks great to me. Of course, I do NOT know how to FMQ, but I know what I like, and I like it. :D :D

nancyh58 11-03-2010 07:23 AM

Wow... I just got a HandiQuilter 18 Avante 30 days ago and am only doing meandering now on the quilts I have to get done quickly. I keep practicing but THIS is exceptional for a first timer!!! Be proud, you obviously learn quicker than me and you will be top of line in a heartbeat!! Yeah!

Fiber Artist 11-03-2010 07:44 AM

That looks like a great first time to me.

Yes, practice is the key but it looks very good for a first try. Keep at it girl!

PamQuilts 11-03-2010 09:53 AM

Thank you so much, everyone, for the nice comments. You've lifted my spirits! I was feeling a little down because I'm not very patient and I want to be able to FMQ like a pro NOW! I know in reality, it takes hours and hours to learn how to quilt like that so I just have to roll up my sleeves and get practicing! :-) BTW...I love this board. You are all so friendly and helpful! Thank You!

dagouaw136 11-03-2010 10:11 AM

boohoofish 11-03-2010 10:50 AM

Looks great to me!

Fabricnut 11-03-2010 01:15 PM

Do you have any suggestions for trying FMQ? I took a lesson but it seems as though one needs to have a little bit of drawing skills. I can only draw stick people and pictures that look like a small childs doing it. Neither would look good on a quilt. :)

IBQUILTIN 11-03-2010 01:56 PM

Great job for a first time. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Keep practicing

I wish I did have advice! I can't draw. I can only doodle. But, doodling on a longarm is so much different than doing it on paper! When I'm through with these 2 quilts I have to make, I'm going to practice, practice, practice! :)

mollymct 11-03-2010 02:15 PM

Oh, I think you are off to an excellent start!!

Kitsie 11-03-2010 02:52 PM

Good start if that's your first attempt! I couldn't do it that well after my 100th!

Rann 11-03-2010 03:07 PM

You did a great job for your first go at it.

Covered in Threads 11-03-2010 03:26 PM

Hi there PamQuilts,
If you ever need some practice pieces, I just might be able to provide you a few. I think you are doing a great job and it won't be long before we'll be hearing about this talented new long arm quilter out there that we know when she first started FMQ!
Keep us posted and I'm serious about sending you a piece or two to "practice" on.

hperttula123 11-03-2010 05:08 PM

That is great! I actually practice on a huge dry erase board. I lay it down on a table and practice my designs that way. As soon as I get the hang of it, I am ready to go quilt it. My mom made me watch the pajama quilted dvd and that's how she does it. It's a good dvd to watch to learn new designs.

if you had a children's quilt it would be cute to see little stick people in the quilting. think how much fun a kid would have looking for them lol

Dreaming 11-03-2010 09:14 PM

I think you did a very good job. Remember, practice makes perfect. :)
