My first Bernina
1 Attachment(s)
I am the lucky new owner of my first Bernina 1130. She is from the mid 80's. I am anxious to start sewing with her! Was lucky to get her for $25.00 and an Bernette 234 serger for $40. I have no clue on how to operate a serger, but I'm anxious to give it a try! Bringing them to be freshened up later today!

Sorry, I forgot to attach the sewing machine.....

What a beauty! I have a 1230 that I absolutely LOVE. Enjoy! :)
Congratulations!
congrats. great prices
I love my Bernina which is from about 2000. I'm sure you will love yours as well.
Lucky you, I was just thinking that I really want to get a serger as well although like you I haven't got a clue on how to use it.
Lucky you. $25.00. I just bought one at the sewing and vacuum store for $700.00. Oh well, congratulations!
Congrats on your 1130! That was my very first Bernina and I loved it! Loved it so much I wore down the metal! A great, great machine. Have fun!
Be patient. My father-in-law bought me a brand new in 1988 as a surprise and took me a good while to get the hang of it. But I sewed with it through 3 kids, gymnastics, jammies, kids shorts and t-shirts and ice skating outfits plus jackets for me and my sister. Take your time to learn how it works and make sure it is UN-interrupted time at the beginning to learn it. Have fun.

I have a Bernina 1530 that is from that same series of Bernina. I haven't had any problem with mine, Enjoy!
I bought a Bernina 1006 at a flea market and I just love it. It works fantastically. Good Luck.
Prism99--I second that. I love my Bernina 1230. We have grown old together. I get it serviced regularly. The other day it was sewing real slowly. I didn't do anything but turn it off and it fixed itself. DebbieCharlie--I have the serge pictured also. Sew on that at a moderate speed. It can go very fast but the thread tends to break at top speed. I don't use mine very often but it does do a nice job when I need seams finished.
Wow, Debbie! You'll be able to go to town on that serger making Kaye Wood's 6-hr. quilt. I also serge the cut ends of my fabric before washing.
Congrats! I used to be a bernina fan, but now I'm a brother fan. LOL
Wow, lucky lady. Such great buys. As for the serger, relax & take your time. I have had several sergers & they take some time to learn & can be intimidating at first, but you can handle it.
I have a 334D serger that looks just like this one. I have used it for over 32 years with just minimal service. Finally put a new blade in last year.
My reg machine is a 1260-Love it! I had an 1130 but had an opportunity to upgrade 18 years ago to a 1260 floor model at my dealer. I sew every day and it still purrs along. |
lucky you.
Great buys! A note on the serger....I have a Viking 905 (which I love), but on some of these older sergers (like mine) it is very important to thread it in a specific order. Try to find a manual, or Google to see how to thread your machine.
I had an 1130...gave it to my oldest daughter...I had the vintage 830...gave it to daughter #2....I now have the Artista 180...all three are awesome!!!! Just wish I could afford the newer 830!!!
How fortunate for you! Great prices and what appears to be great machines! Enjoy
! |
What a great find and at an exceptional price.
Lucky you to find them for such a ridiculous price! If you are in need of specialty feet, they sell them on e bay. I have had the 930 record, 830 record, 180 Artista (with a 200 upgrade), and now the 440 Aurora. I passed the first two on to my sisters who still use them. In between I bought another sewing machine and had to go back to the berninas. I just couldn't get used to it, even though it was a great machine.
I have had a serger for some twenty five years and use it while doing home dec or clothing. I do have two books on projects using the serger that make all of the uses clear. Try looking at your local library to check one out to see if this helps you to get started with it. Oh by the way, the bernina on line site has some nice projects for a free download. |
Congratulations. I missed out on one at an estate sale. It'll teach me not to take more money to an estate sale
Your 1130 looks like my 1230. Great machine!
Berninas are wonderful machines, I've had 7 of them. The 1st one I bought new in 1992 is a 1031 that I still use. Also had an 807 minimatic, 130,140 and 150 Activa, 930 and old 730.

Love my Berninas... Have a 930 from early 80's, a newer 630e, and another from the 80's, Bernette Funlock 004-d serger which I love! Enjoy your great finds!
I bought my first Bernina in 1997 and several years ago I bought #2. The first is now my travel machine. A workhorse for sure.
Boy did you get a really, really great deal. I just took a look on eBay and they are selling from $700 to over $1,000. These older machines are fabulous - people I have known who used to have them and then traded up wish they had kept them. And they are not as fussy as our shiny new computerized ones. I have 2 Pfaff 1473 machines that I take with me to classes, etc. - they sew great and don't mind riding in the car. I can barely lift my new and almost new maxhines😄

WOW what a lucky buy. Congratulations.
Did you get the book with both of them, if you did please read the book before you use it.
I bought a new serger with a book, and it said to cut the threads and tie the new threads to the old thread at the top where your thread goes, and don't forget to cut the thread at the needle, and then start pulling it through, so the old thread will go through the machine and bring the new through with it. If you pull the old thread out before you tie it to the new thread you will have a hard time threading the machine. I made that mistake, and it took me a long time to get it threaded right. I don't want to make that mistake again. Good Luck, and you got the good deals I like to get. |
Good find...Enjoy..
Great score! I'm still sewing on my 830 Record from the 70's and love it so much. Your price is just unheard of... most people know that these old Berninas hold their value very well. Mine is worth at least $300, but i wouldn't sell it!
Love the way you say my FIRST Bernina.
Lucky you. Great machines.
