My first commissioned quilt!

I made a quilt as a baby shower gift that I gave last month, and one of the women at the shower loved it and asked me to make something for her. She offered to pay for it, but since I'm so new to quilting I didn't feel right making a profit on her. She paid for the materials and picked the pattern, and I made it up for her. I'm so excited about how it turned out - I think it's so cute! I'll give it to her this week, so I hope she loves it. It is going to be a comforter for her daughter's toddler bed when she outgrows her crib. I had some leftover material, so I made a little pillow to go with. This is my 4th quilt ever, and my first attempt at stitch in the ditch quilting. Thanks for looking!

kitsykeel 10-21-2012 08:06 PM

Great job for your fourth quilt. Stitch in the ditch is the safest way for me to quilt since I haven't spent any time practicing free motion yet. Have tried a little but prefer piecing a quilt more. She is sure to love it. What a generous gift.

GULCquilter 10-21-2012 08:18 PM

Thanks everyone!

Nancia, it is the Crackle pattern by Aneela Hooey. But, I will be honest, I didn't buy the pattern because it was easy enough to see how it was done just by looking at the picture. It's a layer cake pattern, and you essentially cut the layer cake squares into 6 pieces, and then rearrange the cut up pieces to form the squares in the quilt (there are 5 going across the bottom in the last picture, so you can see what a "square" is). It was actually really easy to put together! I love that every time I look at it I focus on different squares - sometimes I see the actual blocks, sometimes I see on point big squares, sometimes I see stars - I feel like it that plus the cute Walk in the Woods prints will be fun for a toddler!

You did a great job - and that was an ambitious pattern. SID is actually not that easy, so if you can do that well, you should try some other designs too. Have you ever gone to Leah Day's site? It has many many designs, from beginner to advanced. You can google her and it will come up.

Your friend should be thrilled with the results.

Thanks! It is Crackle by Aneela Hooey. It looks complex, but was actually pretty simple!

joyce blint 10-22-2012 10:54 AM

From the looks of this beautiful quilt, I think it's time you started charging....before word gets out and you're swamped w requests!!

jojosnana 10-22-2012 10:57 AM

Wonderful. She will love it.

Maggie_Sue 10-22-2012 11:09 AM

Very pretty, very pretty colors too. . Great 4th quilt. She will be very pleased with it.

sewbizgirl 10-23-2012 03:56 AM

It's beautiful. You should have let your friend pay you for your time. I wouldn't consider compensation for your time to be "profit".

solstice3 10-23-2012 04:56 AM

great quilt ... love the fabric choice

Wow, you may be new to quilting but you do wonderful wonderful work.

Michellesews 10-23-2012 05:47 AM

It is lovely, but isn't your time, expertise and effort worth something? Too many of us sell ourselves short. If you are going to be in the "commissioned quilts" business, you need to charge accordingly. I am a longarm quilter and when I first began that was the hardest thing for me to figure out...how to charge accordingly. Some said I charged too much, other longarmers complained I was too cheap...I finally settled on a price and stuck to it. In your case, you are doing an extremely large amount of work. When I am commissioned to make a quilt "from the ground up"...meaning I do it ALL, I charge per square inch of quilt and make sure they know what it is going to cost before they leave my home. Of course, this is rare, usually I just quilt them, but please, do not sell yourself short! Your time and effort are worth money, and most of us devalue ourselves. Your quilt is beautiful and I am sure you will be getting many more jobs, let's just hope this lady does not spread the word about the deal she got so that others expect it also. I am not trying to offend anyone here, just hate to see anyone not get their worth. Just my .02 worth.

LadyElisabeth 10-23-2012 05:49 AM

Very nicely done. You did a good job. Keep quilting :)

phranny 10-23-2012 05:53 AM
