My First Commissioned Quilt!

4 Attachment(s)
It's a queen-sized minky-backed weighted memorabilia quilt made from: 20 t-shirts, 3 boy scout scarves & badges, a football scarf, and a hospital pillow. I also made a tote bag to store and carry the quilt from the left-over scraps, as well as a duffle bag from his 2 soccer uniform shirts; both are customer appreciation gifts for being patient. The quilt also has a QR code where my customer can record a voice message before she gifts it to her grandson. I'm excited for her to receive it.

Great job on the organization of all the memorabilia into a fabulous quilt. I know it will be loved and appreciated. I am very impressed by how nice your quilting looks on the Minky fabric. I have wanted to try that but always shy away for fear that it will slip round. Really nice quilt.

Great quilt and bags!

rryder 11-06-2017 04:27 AM

You did a great job combining all those different elements into the quilt— the design is fantastic and those bags are the perfect way to use up he scraps. That’s one lucky customer! Good job!

I'm impressed with how you planned the layout - especially those flags at the top. Great job!!

lmc8 11-06-2017 12:35 PM

Thank you fellow quilter's for validation. It was one of those scope creeper jobs. I am an accomplished patch-worker but had not done a t-shirt quilt in the past nor worked with Minky. I was worried about this layout because the non -t-shirt items where my customer's after-thought when I had already interfaced, cut, and squarely laid out the t-shirts according to a lap size, and had cut t-shirt trimmings for use as a scrappy binding, as well as had cut a cotton backing. She didn't know how she wanted them incorporated and trusted me to work them in somehow. I advised her it would grow into a big heavy quilt and significantly increase the cost; she didn't mind, then she settled on making it as large as I could. I had to now use pre-cut t-shirt bindings to fill-in the new open spots between the re-positioned t-shirt images and now use the cotton backing for binding. Therefore, it was my after-thought to use Minky for the backing to make it a truly weighted quilt which turned out to be 13 pounds. The redesign was truly a challenge for me but I am pleased with the results; tested it myself, and it is oh so comfy.

Tweety2911 11-06-2017 12:41 PM

Awesome quilt! The customer will be amazed at the result as I know I am!

Jingle 11-06-2017 02:11 PM

The quilt is great and your work is wonderful. I would not even attempt something like that and I been making quilts and comforters for over 50 years.

Doggramma 11-06-2017 02:14 PM

That turned out great! Nice way to put them all together. Now the other people wanting tshirt quilts will probably be looking for you!

jlt37869 11-06-2017 02:42 PM

Good job!!

ekuw 11-06-2017 03:18 PM

Your layout is fantastic. I've made exactly (1) t-shirt quilt so I have an idea of what it takes to make something like this, but you had extra items too. I can't imagine making a quilt like this; on a scale of 1-10, I'd rate this one as an 11 :-)

wesing 11-06-2017 04:12 PM

That's nice quilt, but I LOVE the atomic quilting! Is that a panto? Can you share some info about it?

lmc8 11-06-2017 08:43 PM

Actually, I drew it and had a long-arm lady digitize it into her automated system for me and she keep it in exchange for teaching me how to deal with the Minky on a longarm.

Mariposa 11-06-2017 08:50 PM

Such a great set!

zozee 11-06-2017 09:02 PM

Really good work. Can't imagine a 13 pound quilt, though!! You really outdid yourself.

Bluelady 11-06-2017 10:34 PM

Very awesome!! I i love the QR code idea.. I think this is such a cool idea.. Now I want to do that for all my quilts! (once I figure out the technology part of it)

quiltingshorttimer 11-06-2017 10:40 PM

you did an awesome job with a difficult assignment! having made about 20 t-shirt quilts for customers, I know how difficult it can get to add in so many different fabrics, and so many different shapes (those scarves!). and you really went above & beyond with the pillow and bags. I sure hope that your customer paid you well for all your creativity and work.

It's called a Storypatch label. The technology part is handled by the StickerIt company.

Awesome. I just finished a 20 t-shirt University of Alabama Quilt. Yours is so cool. I’m going to incorporate the QR code in mine, too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Kris P 11-07-2017 05:26 AM

Wow, Amazing... I've made a few t-shirt quilts, but I LOVE how you treated the borders on yours. You've inspired me!

bneuen 11-07-2017 05:43 AM

Very nice. The block shapes add lots of interest. Great job.
