Well here it is :) This is the big quilt i'm working on, and my first free-motion :) I did a lot of stitching in the ditch, because i know i'm safe doing that, and left a little room for free-motion--i'm loving free-motion :) So i did a cable type chain, not sure if i like that, but oh well, and then i got brave and did stipling on the outer border! And i think the stippling looks good :) So this is what i have done so-far. The big triangles around the centre rose, i have to put something in there, i'm thinking maybe a heart in each one? I could be brave and try a feathered heart, but i'm thinking not lol. And the two burgandy borders, they need some quilting, because part of those borders are where i joined my batting, and so they need some quilting on them. I dont know what im going to do on the burgandy. I will be using white thread on the burgandy too, so whatever i do on that will have to be something easy, because errors will show up on that easy. What about a wavy line, with tiny flowers every once-in-awhile??? I think i'm quite happy with it so far, and really enjoying the free-motion! :) :) :)
PS i'm think, lol i think too much lol, i have to quilt in the burgandy strips, because that is where i joined my quilt sections, sooo, i'm thinking a wavy line with flowers might not be secure enough???? I wonder, maybe i should be brave and do a feather on that...oh gosh, should i be that brave lol lol, i wonder which would be more secure for that?

Barb, your quilt is looking great!! Well done for braving the free motion, it really is fun once you get over the fear

Barb I don't think I saw a pic of this quilt top completed. I know you struggled with the lay out. .... It came out BEAUTIFUL. And the free motion is wonderful. I"m just starting to free motion too and everytime I get a little off course I just take a breathe and say .... "Character, It adds character".

And I keep moving forward :)

sewsewquilter 04-18-2009 03:13 AM

Your guilt looks stunning. Isn't FM fun once you get started. I to didn't try it for the lonnngest because I was afraid. Now you can't stop me. LOL. It hard for me to think Sticthing in the ditch is enought quilting any more. LOL

Your waving line with flowers will be pretty in the burgandy strips. It should be enough quilting.

Glad you took the step to FM. :D I know it can be a hard one. It was for me. :D

littlehud 04-18-2009 06:38 AM

I think it looks wonderful. FM can be so much fun. Glad you like it too.

kluedesigns 04-18-2009 06:52 AM

This is a beautiful quilt, love the pattern and the fabrics :D :D Your quilting is wonderful!!!! I would not know that this is your first time at free motion!!!!! Very impressive :D :D :D

JoanneS 04-18-2009 12:00 PM

Beautiful! Love the fabrics, layout AND your quilting is great! Doesn't look like a first attempt at FM at all.

Debbie1 04-18-2009 12:22 PM

Your quilting is looking very good indeed!

Barb M 04-18-2009 12:47 PM

Awe, thanks so much everyone. Well, i got brave and decided, feathers, why not??! LOL LOL Uhmm, so i did some feathers on the burgandy, lol, i think they look kinda like big lumpy hearts!!! LOL LOL I can't take a picture right now, hubby has to figure out why camera isnt downloading photos, maybe just battery is low. So, my feathers look kinda funny lol

sewnsewer2 04-18-2009 01:07 PM

Ok, so i got brave, feathered on the burgand, and uhmmm, yup, in white thread LOL LOL, i think they will do, but they look like fat wonky hearts? lol And they're not all joined like they should be, with the pretty little teardrop effect??? LOL LOL LOL But, oh well, they will do :) :) :) I think i will finish this feathered strip, and then put my feathering talents to rest for another project! lol The other burgandy strip, think i will do wavy line with flowers lol, much easier, i hope??? LOL :)

Debbie1 04-18-2009 01:27 PM

Actually it looks pretty good - I haven't gotten that brave to try feathers, hearts or anything. I can manage free motion stippling if in small areas. Usually it's stitch in the ditch!

Izy 04-18-2009 01:32 PM

OMG Barb you really have got the free motion off to a tee - I think your 'wonky hearts' are FANTASTIC, DO THE OTHER BORDER THE SAME, it really sets the quilt off!!

Oh noooo lol lol i have to do another one like that??? lol lol Well, ok, maybe :) i must be brave i must be brave :) :) :)

Izy 04-18-2009 01:46 PM

Well you have been FAR braver than I have been and now you are an expert at it from all this practice the next border will be a doddle I am sure Barb...go on you can do it     :D

Barb M 04-18-2009 01:48 PM

Well i'm just so thrilled with this darning foot that hubby got me, 10 dollar foot turning my 40 year old kenmore into a champ lol lol

Barb M 04-18-2009 01:51 PM

Thank you Debbie, i feel scared doing it too. Like, when i do the hearts in the big triangles around the centre rose, no way will i be able to just go by sight, i will get out a pencil and draw those first for sure.

Izy 04-18-2009 01:52 PM

Barb, I prefer my darning foot to the proper springed free motion foot too!! :D

Barb M 04-18-2009 01:53 PM

Oh the darning foot we bought has a spring and jumps up and down :) :) :)

Izy 04-18-2009 01:54 PM

Oh thats the one I didn't like...maybe I need to try it again, so I can do hearts like yours then!! :D

Barb M 04-18-2009 01:55 PM

LOL LOL LOL, now, you dont want hearts like mine lol, they are wonky hearts, and sposed to be delicated feathers LOL LOL

Izy 04-18-2009 01:58 PM

krabadan 04-18-2009 06:13 PM

The quilt is gorgeous!

Barb M 04-18-2009 06:17 PM

Thanks so much everyone, gonna go work on finishing that feathering. Then i think i've decided to do a large simple heart in each big triangle around centre rose, and then maybe stiple around the hearts :)

pennyswings 04-20-2009 01:03 PM

Barb:
Love the quilt so far. Your first attempt at free-motion is great and your first attempt at feathering is fantastic. I practiced a while on some old material but did not like mine, yours came out so much better. I do all my own quilting both hand and free-motion. I love it and can say to anyone that I made the quilt and that makes me proud. I hope you are too. Keep up the beautiful work. Whatever you decide to finish it will be beautiful.
