This is called "Beach Cottages" by Piece by Number/Bottle Quilt Design. I just finished the top today. The back will be a sand print. I'm still deciding how to quilt it. I'm a newbie at the FMQ, but comfortable with the walking foot and decorative stitching. I'm going to do a mix of each I think. I was hoping to complete by New Year's eve for a wedding gift, but life got in the way and I didn't finish on time. I don't want to rush the quilting part, so I apologized for the delay and told them it should be ready in a couple of weeks.
I'm very pleased with how it came out. I've never had one come out this square before and not have to tidy it up a bit! LOL I do plan to do more paper piecing, but have some other projects to do first. Thanks for looking! |

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! The only other paper piecing I ever did was a small 6" sample square of a boat. I found that it is much easier than I ever expected! Definitely worth giving it a go if you are interested in trying it. I do have a couple of suggestions though:
1 - buy extra fabric. the pattern required 3/8 yd blue for each section of the sky. I bought 1/2 and was cutting it very close. I would imagine as one becomes more experienced, it's easier to cut it smaller than I did, mostly for the triangle or odd shaped pieces. 2 - I had this bright idea that it would come together easier if I sewed around the block 1/8 from the seam...well it did, and looked pretty, but it's a pain in the butt to remove the slivers of paper! I won't do that again! LOL 3 - carefully consider your fabrics. I used mostly batiks. Much of mine were scraps anyway, but there is a lot of tiny waste, so less expensive fabric would really be more practical. I didn't mind on this one as it was a gift. This was also the first time I did a totally scrappy border. I am more of a "symetrical" quilter, and have a hard time doing random. :) I cut various sizes of my colors and piled them by color. Then I used what I picked as long as I didn't repeate more than once or twice in the side I was working on. I did peek now and then to see if I needed more of a particular color. With a little more practice, I could probably do a scrappy log cabin w/o hyperventilating! LOL |
Great job!!!
|
It is wonderful. Good job.

That is great....wish it looked like that here in Maine. We are getting a big storm, started Friday night and still going.

To momto4, I want to say please don't be afraid to try paper piecing. As long as you don't start with a teeny tiny pattern (small pieces can be tricky), it is really very easy, fun, and produces very accurate results. My suggestion is that you start with Carol Doak's beginner's book "Show Me How To Paper Piece". She literally walks you through the process, step by step, and you end up with a cute wall hanging. By the time you finish this ittle wall hanging you will feel completely confident with paper piecing. Just make sure you buy the Quarter Inch ruler and use the post card trick. Have fun. |
Thanks for the link - I did find it online already and forgot to edit my post that I had found it. I'm sure that others will want to make it as well if they know or are beach people!
Thanks again. |
I've only done one PP project, and it was a wall hanging consisting of about 30 small houses, trees, etc. (about 3" squares). I thoroughly enjoyed doing PP. To avoid those tiny, annoying pieces of paper, I used the dissolveable paper, and it worked great. You leave the paper in place, and if you wash the quilt/project, the "paper" dissolves. In my case, it's a wall hanging and won't be getting washed on a regular basis, but it was much easier than picking out all the tiny pieces of paper.
Great job on your quilt! |
Very pretty! Great work!
|
I love it! On this cold winter day, it gives me a warm, beachy feeling (well, almost). I think I'd like to try my hand at this.
