My First Quilt- Postage Stamp Quilt

1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone,

This is my first post. I made this quilt for my daughter before I deployed in 2010. I knew that I was going to deploy to Iraq and I wanted her to have something to wrap around her while I was gone the 6 months. We were moving cross country at the time, and my husband drove. I hand pieced all the squares together on the road trip and anytime we were in the car. It took me 8 months to peice it together. I know that there are many flaws in the quilt, but I was very happy with the results and so was she. I literally finished the quilt on the way to the airport for my deployment. I had to google the binding process the morning I left for the deployment. I plan to make another one but larger this time, because I just love the look of scrap quilts. Since then I've made a few rag quilts for gifts, but I love the postage stamp quilt, and I love this board. On my deployment when I had time to get on the internet once a week I would look at all the beautiful quilts and dream of when I could get back to quilt. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for your service and I am in awe of this as a 1st quilt...it is on my list of quilts I want to do but I haven't decided to attempt it yet and I have been sewing for at least 50 years and quilting for about 12 of those!!! You ROCK!!!! PS...I love scrappy quilts, too, and '30's...keep up the good work.

Welcome back, and thanks. Your PSQ is very pretty. I'm saving squares to make one. There are swaps every once in a while, where members trade squares. Mariposa had a swap that just closed for 1.5" squares. SheriR is doing a swap for squares a little bigger. I think 2.5". You might want to check into them if you want more of a variety.
Have fun

It truly is a blanket of love. Glad you are home and safe. Wonderful quilt.

cindy4857 09-23-2012 11:22 AM

(tears running down my face) First I'm glad you made it back! Second how cool that you were able to come up with a way to be in two places at once. (here and Iraq). I get goose bumps thinking of all the love you poured into your daughters quilt
trying to make sure she knew how much you loved her and were only a cuddle away. Your daughter is very lucky to have you for a mom! Her quilt is beautiful and how it came to be is also. Thanks so much for sharing and for caring for us all. I applaud you, it had to of been the hardest longest 6 months of your life, waiting to get back home. I can't even imagine again Thank you!

Great scrappy quilt! Nice story! Thanks for your service!

afchic 09-23-2012 03:54 PM

Thank you guys so much for your kind words. My husband said my daughter took that quilt with her everywhere (she was 10) She's 12 now and still sleeps with it, takes it on road trips etc.. I'm scared to wash it for it may fall apart, but it really made me come to love quilting. I have not done one since then (other than few quick rag quilts that took a couple of hours) but I have already started saving scraps and cutting squares for my next postage stamp. I love this board you guys are so kind. Thank you. My next venture is a Memory quilt, I retire next year and want to use my uniforms to make a quilt.

Chris Anders 09-23-2012 06:50 PM
