The hardest quilt I've done so far and it was my first, don't look to close for the applique is not that good, it was fun and frustrating. I havn't attempted an applique quilt again but I will, there are beautiful applique patterns out there. Comments are welcomed.

Well now, let's see... Your Dresden Plates are beautiful, your fabric/color choices are gorgeous and well balanced, the border appliques are exquisite!! I guess you did ok for a beginner... step it up next time will ya?

You have everything to be proud of, and no reason for shame!! If this is your first, you just raised the bar for the "experienced". Beautiful quilt & great work!!!

patricej 06-14-2007 06:20 AM

i'll take it if you don't want it.
:P

Scooter 06-14-2007 06:21 AM

Thank you so much. This was all scrap material except for the yellow background. My nieces pick out the scraps for me.

BarbC 06-14-2007 07:44 AM

Beautiful quilt and excellent for a first! I believe you are a natural quilter. Is the applique done on the machine or by hand? Barb C.

Scooter 06-14-2007 07:47 AM

Thanks you, All was done by machine.

isnthatodd 06-14-2007 07:59 AM

I absolutely love the color combination. It looks like a very cheerful quilt, with a little bit of imp in it. I can imagine the quilt playing tricks on you, or hiding things.

SandraJennings 06-14-2007 08:27 AM

I thoroughly agree with the ladies, this is wonderful! a natural born quilter if ever I saw one! Keep it up!!

Boo 06-14-2007 08:33 AM

I personally can't believe that is your first quilt! It is lovely. Maybe you should keep those neices handy to pick fabric for you. LOL

Catherine 06-14-2007 10:28 AM

This is absolutly beautiful. what was your applique technique?

sarah333 06-14-2007 12:49 PM

this is a very beautiful quilt

Scooter 06-14-2007 01:02 PM

I glued them down and then zig zagged around them, so not sure if they will hold up for a long time.

When I do machine applique, I use heat N bond lite to secure them and then do a satin stitch around them. They hold very well! I bet your zigzags will do fine.

Whenever I get a new machine, I am going to make sure I have a blanket stitch on it. My current one does not. I really love the look of that stitch.

are you for real. wow , i never would of thought to do it this way. of course it seems much easier this way. well you 've taught me some thing new. and it sounds like something i would like to try .thank you for sharing. .......tia sarah

sarah333 06-14-2007 01:47 PM

did you glue every thing down

Scooter 06-14-2007 01:52 PM

The border leafs and flowers are all glued down, I used a glue stick. Like I said it was my first and I wasn't sure how to do it and trying to pin and hold the small leafs in place while i sewed around them would have taken a few of my fingers.

I'll try the Heat and Bond next time.

But someone mentions a satin stitch what is that?

Nina 06-14-2007 02:00 PM

Wow! would look great over my couch - matches the colors in it.....it's lovely.

Scooter 06-14-2007 02:12 PM

i glued the leafs and the flowers in the border only and then zig zagged around them.

Someone mentioned Satin Stitch, I'm not sure what that is can someone explain?

Sorry I'm teaching myself all this stuff so I do ask alot of questions.

Knot Sew 06-14-2007 02:17 PM

Satin stitch is a zig zag set as close to gether as it will go....check your book or play around
You d :D id an excellent job

Scooter 06-14-2007 02:21 PM

That what I did, i put the zig zag as close together as it would go.

Thanks, I learn, I learn and i learn some more!!!!

Carla P 06-14-2007 03:09 PM

The glue is just fine to use; it will wash away when you wash the quilt where some other fusables will not. It is purely a personal choice, so you did nothing wrong... yet again

Boo 06-14-2007 04:35 PM

I personally find that heat and bond is too stiff, so I also use a fabric glue stick for this type of applique. The fact that it washes out is a plus.

ceannastahr 06-14-2007 06:40 PM

I think it absoulty great looks fluffly and warm. Wonderful job. No way its a first quilt. You surpassed me by a long way

I use the lite heat n bond, but it is stiff... I need to look for that glue and give it a try. Barb C

ceannastahr 06-14-2007 06:53 PM

I use the washable 50 cent glue sticks for kids works great

Celeste 06-14-2007 08:47 PM

Your family must very talented. Your quilt is absolutely beautiful and an inspiration. Keep up the good work.

sewmuch 06-18-2007 06:31 AM

Wow, what a beauty. You sure picked a hard one for the first. My first
was the fence rail and still like to do for a quick one. Good job.

Belinda 09-17-2007 04:27 AM

Iam so impressed! WOW this is your first quilt....what will your future projects be?? you did a fabulous job

redrummy 09-17-2007 07:05 AM

vicki reno 09-17-2007 08:23 AM

You are very talented. My 1st quilt was also a dresden plate but not near as beautiful as yours. Great job. Hope mine is next

grammy 10-25-2007 11:58 AM

Beautiful for a first quilt. I am envious!

lin 10-25-2007 12:58 PM

Wow! Another "first" that my "hundredth" couldn't compete with!! :D You did such a good job on this first quilt. I think it was Carla P that said you've raised the bar for the experienced quilters? She's right!! It's simply beautiful! :)

Joan 10-26-2007 06:00 AM

If that's your first quilt, I can only imagine what the next ones to follow will look like. I am a beginner too and would never even attempt such a difficult quilt!!!! My first was a rail fence pattern and even it took a long time to complete. And frankly, I am intimitated by applique and will have to work up to it. A big CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

JCL in FL 12-08-2007 12:06 AM

My goodness! What a wonderful quilt. Great colors. You sure didn't start out easy. I can't imagine what you'll be doing in ten years. You should be very proud.

barnbum 12-08-2007 05:50 AM

Holy COW!! I'm been quilting for years--and still wouldn't tackle this project!! It's perfect! Thanks for showing the picture. It'd be WOW if it was your 25th quilt--but since it's your first it's WOW WOW!! :D

watson's mom 03-07-2010 09:15 PM

If that is your first quilt, I am going to take up knitting, I'll never be able to keep up to you. It is beautiful, I can only imagine what you are capable of for an encore.

rootyr 03-08-2010 02:35 AM

Wonderful job!

ConnieF 03-08-2010 02:41 AM
