My First String Quilt! Black + White With Yellow Lattice

2 Attachment(s)
I just finished my first string quilt. It is to be a Christmas present for my niece. I love black and white quilts, and have been collecting black and white print fabrics for over a year--I used over 40 different ones in this quilt. She is an interior designer and uses lots of black and white and yellow, so I hope she likes it. I got some good advice on making string quilts several months ago from you all on this Board, and I really appreciate it. I used Pellon 830 as my foundation (it is a leave-in interfacing) and my long arm quilter said it was really great to work with. I was a little worried it would make the quilt too heavy or stiff, but now that it is quilted I can't tell it is there.

Wow, that is impressive. I love the illusion of depth it has and that little pop of yellow is just right. Your niece will love it.

That is a really lovely quilt. You choose the perfect yellow to go with the black and white prints. Beautiful work.

Fabulous quilt! I haven't made a string quilt yet, but I will keep in mind the Pellon 830. Your niece is a lucky girl.

I love this string quilt. The yellow usage was the perfect finishing touch.

Your niece will love love this. I really like the soft warm yellow. I bet you had alot of fun collecting all the blacks and whites. They really look nice together. Will you tell us how you did this block using the interfacing? I really like the look of this. I thought string quilts were little tiny strips. This is such a nice looking quilt.

I cut the Pellon into 10" squares, so each block finishes at 9 1/2". On each square, I first drew a line diagonally from corner to corner. My yellow lattice strips were 1 1/2" wide. I wanted the yellow strips to match up, so I used a ruler and marked 2 more lines, each 3/4" on either side of the center diagonal line so I had the placement of the yellow strips. I put each yellow strip (face up) between the lines. I cut all the black and white print fabrics into strips of various widths: the narrowest ones were 1 3/4", 2", 2 1/2" and the widest was about 3". ( At the advice of several members here, I used the widest strips on the far outside corners since that is where the seams build up when the blocks are sewn together. ). The first B&w strip is placed face down on the yellow one, and sew through the two strips and the Pellon. Press the strip open, and repeat by sewing another strip on top of the last until the Pellon foundation square is covered. Then I flipped the block over, and rotary cut all the strip edges off next to the Pellon square. The Pellon stays on and the blocks are sewn together to assemble the quilt. really quite easy. It was a fun process, and I look forward to making more! Let me know if you have other questions.

You are fast! Thank you for these instructions. You are a great teacher. I'm going to try one of these when I'm feeling better. Thanks again.

Gorgeous! Your niece will love it.Love the backing too.

Teacup 09-02-2015 03:14 AM

Thanks for the review on Pellon 830. I bought some for a string quilt but was hesitant to try it, afraid it was too stiff. Good to know it worked for you!

bjsmith57 09-02-2015 03:32 AM

Very nice...thanks for sharing.

daisydebby 09-02-2015 04:26 AM

Just love it....the colors are just right. And, THANKS for your quick instructions. I think I'll get some Pellon 830....have been using old pages from a telephone book and dreading getting the paper off the back.

ManiacQuilter2 09-02-2015 04:32 AM

Very elegant Jeanne. Love the soft pop of yellow.

DianneK 09-02-2015 04:58 AM

it is the nicest string quilt I have seen so far, the yellow was perfect

tessagin 09-02-2015 05:03 AM

This is gorgeous. Wanting to do the same for my son. He likes red and black. Trying to stay away from girlie prints.

Trapunta 09-02-2015 05:50 AM

Great work! And great fabric selection. All the different black and white patterns give it a lot of interest, along with the yellow.

Jordan 09-02-2015 09:54 AM

Love your beautiful quilt. Your niece is a lucky lady. Thank you so much for the instructions and the review on the pellon. I have been wanting to make a string quilt but hesitated about the foundation I should use now I think I will try and find the pellon you used. You are very helpful---you also helped me about good quilt shops in Tulsa when I visited my son and his family in Tulsa and I went to one you suggested and left lots of money there and enjoyed the shop tons!

Jeanne S 09-02-2015 10:08 AM

Jordan, thanks for your note. The Pellon was great to work with (both piecing and quilting) but it does add some weight and a little stiffness to the quilt, so it will be a warm one. It does soften up with a couple of washings, and I like the drape it gives the quilt.

GingerK 09-02-2015 12:06 PM

Your quilt is so pretty. I really must move that design up my bucket list. Great job!

Quilter 65 09-02-2015 12:17 PM
